Just thought I would give you all an update on Ocean Point.

First we LOVE Ocean Point . .. a bit of heaven on earth! We are into our second week and the aaaahhhh mode has definitely set in :)
Two of the buildings are being refurbished. We are staying in Kingfish. The units are being totally redone . . .paint, rugs, curtains, furniture and small appliances. I would say less then 50% of the building is occupied as the redo is just nearing completion. In the main lobby there is a monitor that say the resort is 95% occupied . . .though it does not seem very crowed at all.

It is our understanding that the Sailfish building is also getting a redo but in a different decor. They were offing owners a tour but we missed it . . . will try this week to remember.

I can honestly say whoever the designed was for this redo should be used in all the Marriott resorts. I never would have selected the colors that they used but somehow it works and works well. The colors are vibrant and relaxing at the same time. The window treatments are soft sheers of subtle transparent colors . . .sort of like looking at the ocean through waves of color. The whole look is very upscale yet understated if that makes sense.

While we were here last week a new lock system was installed. This made for a few unhappy vacationers who did not check their phone messages and found themselves lock out of their units. The new system is easier to use . . .just hold your card in front of the lock and it opens. I asked why the change and was told the new cards for the new system were not effective by placing the card next to your cell phone. Since we do this at least once a stay this is a nice feature. Not sure of the other benefits but I am sure there must be more. The new system seems good.

Every time we come to Ocean Point the resort just seems nicer and nicer. I think it is one of the best maintained resorts of all those we have visited.
For those who know the area, the new beach mall area up the street is looking good. The park are is very nice . . .lots of additions. Two of the mall building are complete, a third is nearing completion and there is still an old section of the Mall where the subway is located. Johnny Long Boats is open and much larger and seems to be the "happening" place for evening "hanging out." They had an October Fest two nights last week which closed down the streets. There were tons of people enjoying the festivities. Other then a huge beach type store most of the other retail spaces are vacant and "For Lease."

We took a tour (sales presentation) of Marriott's Oceania Palms up the street . . .beautiful . . .more on the tour in later thread. Just for the record . . of the three people we talked to about the new point system . . . two had joined it and one was not going to take the tour. We are still undecided . . .more on that later.

At the tour we were told Marriott purchased the North Tower's building just past the mall. Marriott has partnered with Ritz Carlton to manage the property. Marriott will sell these as owner occupied condos. Very interesting. Beautiful tall buildings in a great location and what appears to be very nice ground and amenities. All prices were all well over a million dollars with the original developer.

If anyone has question . . .let me know. If the question is what building . . .it depends. They all have their pluses depending out who is coming and what you are looking for during your stay. Bottom line for me . . . can not go wrong with Ocean Point.

PS. A few years ago we discover a delicious Italian restaurant called Carmines (on PGA Blvd just across the bridge from Publics on the same side of the road as Public coming from Ocean Point). What we did not know about was the connected deli . . . a feast for hungry eyes . . . what a deli . . . I am sure it would rival any in NYC plus you can also buy prepared dinners items served in the restaurant . . . all you have to do it take them home and heat them up.

sandytoes,

Great report. I agree that Ocean Pointe just seems to get better with age. Just like me.:hysterical: I think the GM, Chery Moore, and her staff are the ones that deserve most of the kudo's for that one. The renovation credit in large part goes to the Senior VP on the board, Julie Parmegiani. She and the other board members worked pretty hard to get this remodel done correctly. I'm glad to see the end result is good.

We'll be down for 3 weeks on Friday and we usually stay in Kingfish. Are they closing floors to do the renovation or are they doing it room by room in sections? Interesting about the North Tower. I wonder if they plan on managing it as a condo or turning it into a fractional/timeshare arrangement. It looks like Marriott is taking over Singer Island the way they developed at HHI.

Carmine's has always been a regular stop for us each year also. Great restaurant. They have a seafood place across the street but I don't care for that as much.

How is the miniature golf course in back of the Tiki Bar. Someone mentioned it in another post and it was the first I've heard of it? I guess I'll pack my putter and some balls.

I agree this is an outstanding resort and this resort should be in Tug's Top 15 of Marriott's Resorts.

Marriott is behind the technology times. The issue with the *magnetic* key cards was that flip phones had a hall effect sensor in them (magnets) and that would erase the programming of the card. Today smart phones have replaced the flip phones with magnetic sensors so it's not so much an issue. Not sure it was really necessary to switch to RFID cards like they did.

What about the abandoned/failed condo development a couple doors up from Ocean Point, what does Marriott say about that?

Ok here is the update . . . snooped around and asked some questions and attended the informational breakfast this morning.

Kingfish has gone though the 5 year "soft" renovations as described above. In addition all the pool furniture was replaced last week while we were here.

Sailfish is going though the 10 year everything changed renovation which has been a work in progress for the last two years due to scheduling issues according the Cheryl Moore the General Manager.

I believe the renovations in Kingfish are now done or in their last days. Cheryl mentioned the Sailfish Building is fully booked this week. She had hoped to have a unit open for guest could see the new changes. Everything but the cabinets and counter tops have been changed including the tile floors. I am assuming maybe that renovation is also been completed.

Ab out a third of the lock at the resort have been converted. We were told the locks are more secure then the old locks . . .not sure in what way.

JimF41- by Friday I think ll the updating we definitely be completed. Currently we have two keys for the locks . . .one for our room and the old key for the gated. The gated will be the last to be converted to the new system. Again by Friday I don't think you will have a worry.

The 9 hold mini-putting green is completed but they are waiting for signage and the grass to grow in a bit so there are no tripping issues. I think Cheryl said it would be opened by the end of the week . . .looks nice and I am sure it will be a hit.

I discover another family who own 5 Marriott weeks who signed up for the new point system . . . this makes 3 out of the 4 we asked who signed up. We still are on the fence.

As for the pink building North of Kingfish . . .we get the same story we have been getting for the past 5 years. . . . Marriott and the pink building will continue to be good neighbors but there is no intention to buy the property now or in the future!

Yes fees are high but you get what you pay for and I for one am glad I purchased a top rate resort where the pride of ownership and management shines though . . . thank you Cheryl Moore, the staff and the board for doing an excellent job!

Costco Palm Beach Gardens Info

We have liked Ocean Pointe so much that we also purchased a week at Oceana Palms. We are looking forward to our first stay there beginning 10/30.
I noticed there is a Costco in Palm Beach Gardens on Northlake. Has anyone shopped at this Costco and do they have wine? Since we are on a budget for this trip, we plan to eat in more than usual, so good food and wine are essentials.

Yes, and I use it all the time and it does have a great wine selection.

There's also a Super Walmart nearby in case you want good value without purchasing large quantities.

The Super Walmart also offers gas, while the Costco does not.

All of the Costco's in the area do indeed sell gas.

Double checking the website, the Palm Beach Gardens Costco on North Lake Boulevard does not offer gas, however the Royal Palm Beach Costco does (but it is 11 miles away).

Maybe gas at the Palm Beach Gardens Costco is a new offering and they haven't updated their website????

Pelican Grill-Anyone eaten there?

When I was looking for restaurants near Ocean Pointe and Oceana Palms on Trip Advisor, Pelican Grill had very good reviews (excellent food and service, reasonable prices, good wine list). I have never eaten there during my trips to Ocean Pointe. Can anyone provide comments regarding this restaurant.

Pelican Cafe

It is actually Pelican Cafe (not Grill). According to Trip Advisor, it is 1.6 miles from Oceana Palms at 612 US Hwy 1, Lake Park, FL 33403-2916.

It appears that the most direct route is Blue Heron to US 1. The reviews are very favorable and don't mention anything negative about the surrounding area. I hope to try it on my upcoming trip and am interested in TUG members experiences.

We stopped at the Pelican Cafe on Sunday morning. I had eggs with a short stack and my bride had a panini sandwich. Both meals were excellent. It has inside and outside dining and a really extensive menu. It's closed on Monday and has limited hours but is well worth a visit. When you go for breakfast they give you one of their homemade donuts to try. Hands down it was the best donut I've ever had.

We're going to try it again for dinner and I'll post back on that. As far as getting there it's about 3/4 mile from Blue Heron going north on US 1 (Old Dixie Hwy). It's on the left going North.

Jim,
Thanks for the review. I look forward to learning about your dinner experiences. Trip Advisor reviews mention reasonable wine prices in addition to excellent food. It is getting difficult to find good restaurants who don't mark up their wine 300%+.
