This is great for getting off the island and for groceries but no destination to bike to like South Beach or Harbour Town. Where do you like to bike to?

We don't bike a lot but we love to eat at Santa Fe Grill, which is not too far. We also have to make a Guiseppi's stop when in HHI.

We don't bike either, but if you are OK using the bike paths along US 278, it's not all that far to Shelter Cove Town Center and Shelter Cover Harbour - shops, restaurants, boats, etc.

Hi Suzzanne, Long time, no "sea". ;)

Why not ride into any of the Sea Pines Marriott resorts and rent your bikes there?
Then you can enjoy the gorgeous bike trails that only Sea Pines provides.
I'm pretty sure Monarch will rent them to you. Or Harbour Club or Heritage.

If not, there is a nice bike rental place at the golf course where you turn onto Lighthouse Rd ---Sea Pines Bike Rentals-----
just down from Monarch. You'll see a green striped awning.

Also there used to be another nice bike rental spot in the parking lot of the small shopping plaza
where Truffles is located (across the street from Swallowtail).
https://goo.gl/maps/E2iez1aQAokzfYtDA

Both bike rental places make it very convenient to use the SP bike trails when staying outside of SP,
and you can lock your bikes anywhere inside Sea Pines.

Personally I wouldn't ride bikes at all if I had to use the paths alongside 278. Boring, not nearly as beautiful, and imho, not safe.
Riding inside Port Royal Plantation isn't so bad, but it's still not Sea Pines.
If you're riding bikes for an hour, or half a day, a ten minute ride into Sea Pines is nothing.

FOR THINGS TO DO:
Go into Bluffton and enjoy everything---the shops, the great restaurants, a few historical sights (look them up), whatever.
Travel to Beaufort----it's a fantastic, historical little city which is very walkable....awesome shops and cafes, and such a gorgeous waterfront...
lots of moss-covered oaks, etc.
Travel to Savannah.....too much to see and do to say, but you'll find a lot if you simply Google it. The multiple city parks (or Squares) are wonderful.
And if nothing else, just sayin', my wife could spend a day in the Home Goods store just down the road.

The bike path running along Union Cemetary Road (right out of the property then first right) can take you over to historic Mitchellville and Fish Haul Park. From there you can take the bike path along Beach Street to reach the Main Street area and then wind your way over to the high school/community recreation center.

You know how one thing leads to another while searching the web. . .

Well your comment about Union Cemetery Road led me down a trail and I found this: https://heritagelib.org/events

We're planning to attend the talk about Native Americans of Port Royal Sound.

It's back at the other side of Pope but sounds interesting.

This is from an older thread I contributed to.

There are several interesting civil war and African American sites on this part of the Island, more than in Sea Pines. From 278 turn right onto Union Cemetery Rd., https://heritagelib.org/union-cemetery-road. This is the first right after Coggins Point. Union Cemetary dead ends into Dillion Road. Make a right on Dillion until you come to the intersection with Beach City Rd. This is the Mitchelville area, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchelville. On the corner to the left is a Black church and on the right is the first school house for African Americans on the Island. Make a right and ride down to Mitchelville Freedom Park, which is on the right, https://exploremitchelville.org/. When you’re finished there exit to the left and ride past the Dillion intersection and you’ll find Ft. Howell on the right across from one of the airport runways, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Howell.

DH is an author of books about Michigan's involvement in the Civil War, http://jackdempseybooks.com, so we're familiar with the local Union cemetery. In April 2013, on behalf of the Michigan Sesquicentennial Committee, which was part of the Michigan Historical Commission, we and another MI Tugger couple (SunandFun'83) laid a memorial wreath at the graves of Michigan's African American soldiers buried in the National Cemetery in Beaufort.

We've explored Mitchelville in the past and will probably ride bikes through there again. We don't remember going to Ft. Howell so thank you for mentioning that.

Yesterday we went to the talk at USCB Hilton Head Campus (beautiful facility) about local Native American history. That was nice and we came away with so much more. . . We met others from MI and talked about their experiences with relocating to the Island. Of course I mentioned DH's work as a Civil War author. That led to the presenter telling him about, and offering to connect him to, a local who specializes in the subject of Civil War medicine. Amazing connection since one of the current books DH is working on is about Civil War medicine.

So my little thread on TUG led to a conversation and several connections.

Had a nice bike ride and walk around Ft. Howell. It was 73 with blue skies. First we went to lunch at Robbers Row grill. Then biked to the fort. I’m always suspicious when the biking is extra easy ;) Sure enough, on the return I noticed a slight incline and headwind. After the fort we road over to Fish Haul Beach Park. The tide was out….way out! That’s why I love visiting that beach. It’s an amazing ecoculture.

We will be going to HH soon BUT don't like the beach cruiser bike. Do they have more standard bikes (like ten speeds) in the area of Surf watch? I saw a bike rental company had them near the entrance to Seapines (Atlantic Bikes) but nothing near Surf Watch.

The bike trail map shows a lot of trails but none in the gated neighborhoods. Are the trails in the gated neighborhood blocked off so you can't go on them unless you're staying there? If you can go on them, is there somewhere to see where they are? We'll be at Surf Watch so that end of island would be nice - Like Port Royal.
TIA

Many of the bike rental places have only beach cruisers because the sand wreaks havoc with gears, but this place on Arrow Road has 7-speed bikes and will deliver/pick-up anywhere on the island on your schedule: saltysbikerental.com

I can only speak to Leamington inside Palmetto Dunes, where access isn't allowed for non-residents inside the gates. From SurfWatch I always liked pedaling around the neighborhood or heading over to the Shelter Cove area for those bike paths. If you can rent a bike rack, too, you could drive in to Sea Pines for those trails, or, off-island to Pinckney Island. The trails there are a mix of paved or dirt but it's a beautiful site to spend a few hours.

Blufton has the most incredible Farmers Market every Thursday where I would highly recommend the stan with the crabcakes and she-crab soup, the stand selling frozen ravioli from a Charlestown restaurant that tastes better than most any restaurant ravioli I've ever had, the stand with blueberry muffins that are half a meal by themselves . . . the list goes o and on. In Beaufort you can book a walking tour that is a wonderful experience. Just saying.

Love all the suggestions; thank you! We will be at Barony Beach for the first time (actually first time to HHI) this May.

Are they doing the Daufuskie Island boat and golf cart tour, complete with a boiled shrimp buffet lunch? We loved it and would do it again.

I was going to say Fish Haul Creek and Mitchelville Parks, but a few others already did, I concur!

Frankie Bones is one of my favorite restaurants also, in the Main St. area.

Friends of ours took a day tour to Daufuskie Island about a year ago and said the entire island is very depressed now, that locals told them COVID depressed their local economy to a much greater extent than even Hilton Head. I'm hoping that it's picked up since then but haven't heard anything more recently.

The bike paths in the gated communities are maintained by the landowners in those communities. They are not available to the public.

Last morning at Barony. The kitchen/living room set up and the view from our balcony made all the difference. We set the arm chairs right in front of the door wall. I finished 2 quilt tops while we were here. :cheer:

Moving to Grande Ocean. It was going to be a 7 night stay but yesterday I found out there's a quilt show next weekend in North Charleston so we've cut the point stay to 4 nights and will stay in Charleston for a couple nights by using the ever-depreciating Bonvoy points. (Just enough time to finish the last quilt top I have in my box).

We went to the Bluffton Farmers Mkt today. Only a few tents with veggies and some of them were not grown in SC. There were locally grown strawberries, which was enough to get me there. My husband bought crab dip, but I noticed that the crab cakes were enormous. Didn't see the ravioli or blueberry muffins, but there was a lot of food. Lines were long for the BBQ and bread.

If you're exchanging in through II, be aware that you are most likely to be in the Garden Villas, which are separated from the resort by the Westin. Our "garden view" was of the Westin parking lot. The constant traffic made it impossible to enjoy our balcony. The Guest Relations Manager told me that all II exchangers are initially assigned over there, and that it was not common for them to be moved to the main resort. A true garden view would have been acceptable, but I was definitely disappointed in our placement. I hoped my Marriott Lifetime Titanium status might help, but no such luck.

I'm sorry to hear that. We'll be down there again in April and I'm looking so forward to those blueberry muffins. And yes, those crabcakes are huge and all crab, no filler. The place has always been loaded with tents and choices, but I've never been there in the winter.

Does anyone know if the Garden side at Barony has a pool bar? We will be staying there in a couple of weeks and would love it if it did! Thanks!
