Heading back to Aruba Surf Club at the beginning of May ... our second trip back, can't wait!!!!!!!! :whoopie:

First time there, we did not get a rental car. Second time back, we are getting a rental for at least half the time, if not for the entire week.

Would appreciate folks recommendations on car rental companies. Ideally, I would like to pick-up a rental at the airport ... not sure if there are rental cars for pick-up at the airport?

As well wondering the pricing difference between 3 or 4 days vs. an entire week?

Cheers,

Yes, you can get rental cars at the airport. We rented with Avis a couple of years ago - reserved an SUV but when we went to pick it up, they didn't have any and gave us a minivan instead. I didn't care that much, but the van (some make/model I never heard of) had very weak air conditioning that didn't really work, so we sweat a lot.

You can also get Thrifty, National, Alamo, and Hertz at the airport.

Your best bet is to go to BreezeNet www.bnm.com, type in AUA (the airport in Aruba) and play around with some dates. You will get the prices for all the rental car companies across the board and you can compare.

We just used TopDrive on the last trip and they were terrific- on time pick-up at the airport, located a few minutes away, on drop off just drove us back in the car and dropped us off, and actually got a 2009 car as ordered. Usually the cars in Aruba are fair to poor, but this was in good condition and handled well. We've used Econo before and check-in took forever and the cars were less than stellar, and used Royal many times until a friend had real aggravation over quality in December. Their cars were very run down. For a few dollars more we chose a 2009 Galant and it was worth the few dollars to have a car that handled well.

Over the years we've used Econo, Economy, Avis, Janzen and Budget. In the past 5 years it's been strictly Budget. Competitive prices, located right at the airport, quality clean vehicles, they always have what we book(not always our experiences with other co's), they dont attempt to nickle and dime ea scratch upon return ie: you dont have to over inspect the vehicle upon pickup(a problem we had with another company who insisted that obvious old scratches was our credit card insurance companies responsibility), and they provide a discount for return customers :)

Do you mind sharing the name of the company- it would be good to know for future reference who is prone to shaft their customers.

Cheers,

We've used Economy for years. They give discounts for people at the Marriott. We had a horrible experience with Thrifty 2 yrs ago. We needed a van--when we got there, they did not have a car for us. So this year we went back to Economy. They have a branch at the Ocean Club.

I recommend Economy and I recommend avoiding Royal, recent bad experience with Royal. Had a nice clean, well functioning car from Economy.

Has anybody used Amigo Car Rental and what experience they had?

Thx.

We tried Amigo a couple years ago and didn't have such good luck. The car we reserved wasn't at the airport when we arrived. They gave us a junker and told us to pick up our vehicle at their other office the next afternoon. So we pack up our beach things the next afternoon, drove to the office and we were told the other renter was too tired from fishing to return our vehicle so we would have try again the next day. Why they didn't call us to tell us this news is beyond me when they had our paperwork sitting on the desk with our contact info. Finally had the right vehicle delivered the next day. It was a minor inconvenience but when I'm on vacation, I don't want to be chasing down the vehicle I rented months in advance.

Here's a couple threads I've seen on Amigo on the visitaruba board: car stolen and less than reputable.

We used Thrifty when we were there a couple years ago. We are satisfied with the car we got from them.

We get our car through Hans at Tropic.

We always do the 5 day rental special from Tropic for $145.
http://www.tropiccarrent-aruba.com/

We get a cab to the resort from the airport stopping on the way to pick up groceries and some adult beverages. We spend our first 2 days at the resort on the beach and eating at local restaurants. Then on monday we meet tropic in the lobby and sign papers and get in the car.

After we get our rental we go to the store and stock up on groceries. Then we explore the island and far away restaurants for the rest of the week. When we check out we load the car and see things we have missed or want to do again until time to go to the airport. The Tropic guys will be waiting on you right in front of the airport. No shuttles, just sign the papers, hand them the keys, and roll your luggage into the airport. I will use Tropic again for 5 days when I return to Aruba.

If you belong to a wharehouse like BJ's they have discounted rates for various companies. What I di is go to all the rental companies on line and plug in the codes and see which is cheaper.
We usually get a week around $135
