Europe on $5 a Day was our travel Bible during our month off from our university in Germany in the early 70s. We had our parents buy us student Eurail passes for Christmas, and we used Frommer’s book to find the youth hostels and other inexpensive lodging and restaurants in Italy, France, Spain, and Germany, not to mention serving as our touring guidebook. I think my expenses averaged $8/day including souvenirs. That year was a major influence on my life, and Frommer played a significant part. May he rest in peace!

He was before cable and all the travel experts on the internet. RIP, Frommer, you were the best. IMHO.

I backpacked around Europe for three months after university in the summer of 1972 before starting my career in the fall. His thick guide (I still have my heavily dogeared copy in my personal library) was my travel bible that summer, too. It had just been retitled Europe on $5 & $10 a Day!
