My 15 y/o daughter and I, and maybe her girlfriend, want to exchange into somewhere at the end of July. She's got her heart set on Arizona b/c friends have gone there, and there is availability, but all I can think of is hot, hot, hot. We live in a wooded area of PA, where it doesn't get much hotter than the high 80's, maybe occasionally in the 90's but that's rare.

Questions - Which areas in AZ or NV are hottest or less hot? Or is it all too hot to contemplate for July?

What about Vegas - is it pretty much just gambling and adult entertainment, or are there fun things to do for a Mom and two relatively goofy girls?

Advice?:)

Its much cooler in Sedona in the summertime than in Vegas, so that is definitely a consideration. Plus there will be many more things for your daughter and her friend to do.

What about Vegas. . . are there fun things to do for a Mom and two relatively goofy girls?
If you all like to shop, there would be ample opportunities in LV in air-conditioned spaces as all the big resorts have shopping areas attached. I think the girls would enjoy all the sights at the Venetian, Bellagio, Fashion Show Mall, Caesar's Palace Forum Shops, etc. Hanging out at a swimming pool should appeal to them, too. You could go out to Red Rock and Valley of Fire for some sightseeing. Some of the shows would be entertaining, too.

I always had a fun time with my girls there.

Phoenix ( Scottsdale ) AZ and Las Vegas can be VERY hot. We are warm weather folks and we will not go to either place in the summer. The old dry heat cliché is meaningless when the temps reach 110+. I lived in Phoenix for several years and spend a lot of time all over Nevada and Arizona.

We operate on a school schedule, so that's when we travel most...and have been to Arizona and Nevada several times in the heat of summer. As another poster said, Sedona is definitely cooler (but that's relative too) and worth the trip. In Las Vegas, be grateful for the casino air conditioning and the misters (not men, machines that spray you with moisture). A lot of outside stuff is available in the area, but it's really difficult to be in that heat for an extended period of time. Laughlin is really hot. It's a hot trip to the Grand Canyon too, but again worth doing....bring a lot of water with you. Pheonix is just plain HOT. Having said that, we'd do it all again, and probably will. Temperatures when we've been to these places in June or July have been in the 90's, the 100's, the 110's and that's something!

Of everythingmentioned so far, I'd try for Sedona. Flagstaff might be a possibility as well.

Phoenix and Vegas are blast furnace hot that time of year and Vegas has gone decidedly adult in nature. We did Vegas when our daughter was 15 but, that's back when Vegas was trying to remake itself as a "family" desination.

The OP said Arizona or Nevada, and the responses @ Nevada have mostly been for Las Vegas. What about Lake Tahoe???

Weather is beautiful up there during the summer. MANY things to do and see---would keep the "young adults" (teenagers) busy most of the time.

I am not a big Vegas fan, especially in the summer. My first choice would be Tahoe and second choice would be Sedona.

I thought about Lake Tahoe. The description the OP gives of home makes it sound as if they want something different the wooded area of Lake Tahoe.

I have to second Lake Tahoe where we own at the Ridge Tahoe!

We are going up there this Sat for the Memorial week at our condo to just kick back and relax and enjoy the lake, casino's and couple shows at Harvys and probably our dinner cruise on the lake! We do this every year that we come up!:cheer:

Neither with teenage daughter

Tahoe might be ok that time of year. They will have more opportunity to find teenage boys in Tahoe. Vegas for adults and if you (as an adult) were coming to Phoenix I could recommend a bunch of stuff. But for young people, it is just so BORING.

thanks!

Wow,

Thanks for all the great advice! Not sure why there'd be more teenage boys in Tahoe than elsewhere...I sure hope I don't have to spend the week dealing with summer romances!

Despite the heat, we've ended up with a 1 bdr at the Westin Kierland Villas in Scottsdale. I hope the a/c and pools and lazy river will help with the heat, and if not, then it'll be a learning experience :)

How funny-this is my exact itinerary this summer. Can't wait! I also have a
15yr old in tow...although it's the male variety :)
