Apple iPod Touch (2012) Review & Rating - by Sascha Segan/ PCMag.com

"The new iPod touch is the best portable player for music and video on the market by a long shot, but why would anyone buy it? Prices start at a whopping $300. The iPhone 5 is available on four carriers now and as long as you qualify for an upgrade, you can essentially get the iPod touch plus phone capabilities for $100 less. We don't know what the rumored iPad mini will cost, but you can get a perfectly decent 7-inch Android tablet for that price. Gaming maybe? I'm stumped here."

Still, it earns PCMag's Editor's Choice

I agree with the conclusion. We have two of the 4th gen iPod Touch in our household, and while they're nice enough devices, relative to other options one can buy now they're vastly over priced at $299. Actually, they'd even be over priced at $199. An 8GB Nexus 7 tablet is $199 and makes the iPod look like a kids toy. I can't imagine why anyone would choose to buy a new iPod Touch.

The touch will still have a significant market amongst kids. My 8 year old loves his touch and uses it all the time. As a parent I really like it also because Apple keeps tight control of their app store which makes it very kid friendly and I don't have to worry about him downloading some x-rated or inappropriate app. I still control the password and I still need to approve everything app he gets. Android has far more "adult oriented" types of apps.

The touch is so much better the the Nintendo DS and my son has pretty much stopped using his DS. Most of the games are free or $0.99 and you don't have to deal with those expensive cartridges which end up usually getting lost.

The new touch is a little pricey, but I still think it will do fine.

I think Apple really screwed up with the new Nano. The previous Nano was a mini hit because people liked to make watches out of them. Instead of redesigning it, they should've just tweaked it a little and added bluetooth connectivity. Even better, if they would've come out with their own iWatch with bluetooth then I think they would've had a massive hit.

BTW, I did order one of the new itouches with personalized engraving as a reward/gift for one of my employees who reached a milestone. I ordered it THREE weeks ago and it still hasn't shipped.

Google Play has PIN lockable content filtering. Regardless, I don't let my kids download apps without my permission, so it's a non-issue in our house.

Is there a non-phone Andriod device in the size class of the Touch? Almost all of my daughter's friends got one when she did -- around 8 or 9 yo. Too young for most to have a phone. It is a excellent platform for music, videos, movies, games, and fits in your pocket -- it goes with her everywhere. And when compared to the handheld gaming-only devices, it blows them away in functionality for not that much more $$.

I got my daughter the iPod for the same reason. More utility than just a handheld gaming device.

Samsung Galaxy Player is a comparable Android device. Comes in sizes up to 5". The 5" unit is around $195 on Amazon. I've never played with one, but they get great reviews. Had they been available 2 years ago, I almost certainly would have bought one over the Touch.

BTW, the 5" iteration has a GPS also.
