The price of RCI Last Call and II Getaways has gone up and the you cant get cheap trades like in the old Wyndham days. But I just did some research for the next two months and staying in time shares would be cheaper than a house or apartment. I think we had some Tug members trying it back the good old days. I don't know if anyone is still doing it. My wife and I both work from home and can be anywere as long as we can get good WiFi. The WiFi is probably my biggest concern.

Just about. I stay in my Wyndham or Hilton timeshares over 40 weeks a year for work in DC. I only stay Mon-Fri (check out on Friday) so I get the max benefit. Weekends I stay in a hotel close by (using a lot of hotel points) or I go back home to PA. Vacations I stay in my DVC resorts or using RCI to trade into other locations. All told it is probably 48 weeks or so a year right now.

Changing locations I keep to a minimum. I stay in either Old Town Alexandria (Wyndham) or The District Georgetown (Hilton). Old Town where I stay most often lets me store food (refrigerated, frozen and dry staples) and other items, so I just go to the storeroom and pick everything up each week when I check in.

There was a Tugger who did it, and had a website to document it.

yes, renting timeshares could be cheaper than renting a house but changing residences every week ..... :(

You don't have to change residences each week. Many times the type of resorts that have weeks on last resort have a lot of them. I am sure that many times they were able to stay at one place for many weeks.

Ron and Joan were one set of Tuggers who stayed many, many weeks in timeshares. I haven't seen much from them lately. @kanerf, that's pretty amazing that you've set yourself up in that way. Likely cheaper than trying to rent an apartment in that area!

Way cheaper. Rents around this area are about $3K for a one bedroom/studio apartment. And you don't pay utilities. I get housekeeping and the Hilton Club in Georgetown even has a lounge with free food, beer and wine. It is located in an Embassy Suites so you get the free hot breakfast as well there.

What do you figure you are spending a month on maintenance fees? And hotel?

@Clifbell is currently traveling in timeshare full time.

We aren't full time, but close to 2/3 of the year in timeshare or traveling. I could easily sell everything and go full time timeshare, but my wife, not so much....

I have not set down and calculated this in quite awhile, but I would say about $800-$1000 a month. It varies a lot on the hotel side since those costs change by season. Much cheaper in the winter months than summer.

This is where I am terribly lacking in know how. You spend less in a month than one weeklong timeshare costs me. Maintenance fees are so high for me and not in a great demand area either

I pay other maintenance fees such as DVC and RCI which I did not include in that figure since these are for leisure and not my work stays.

I understand its not the same as a house but comparing it more to van or RV life. We sold our home and are currently renting until December 1st. Not sure I want to buy a house or pay rent at todays price. Hoping the market comes back down. Kids are grown and out of college so now traveling is at least an option. I travel a lot for business and have tons of miles and points. When I am traveling my wife can work from anywhere. All we need is Wifi and access to an airport.

There was another couple who made the attempt and maybe are successful at it. I want to say DeeDee was one name, maybe Mike and DeeDee, but I could be mistaken on the name.

@ronandjoan spent several years in timeshares and finally settled down but they still travel quite a bit.

Wyndham points with platinum status would be very easy to live in timeshares full time. Very expensive to attain the status, but once you had it, the lifestyle with free housekeeping, utilities, etc., would be a cheap way to live the life of luxury without spending a fortune doing it.

I beleive it was @Mike&Edie. They had a blog at www.fulltimetimeshare.com, but I see it hasn't been updated since 2019 and haven't been on TUG since December 2020.

When I was on the HOA board of an OBX timeshare, we has an owner who owned 52 weeks of timeshare around the country, all fixed weeks, and he drove from resort to resort year round. We send his m/f bill care of the timeshare resort he would be at the week the bill came out. He was an older man, and his health was clearly deteriorating on his last stay. He died before his week in the following year. He bought his week at our resort on the resale market, and I presume that is where he bought most or all of them.

@rickandcindy23 Aren't you close to being in a timeshare year round?! ;)

I think you are referring to Mike and Edie.
We met while they were traveling, and I lived near Atlanta -- nearly 8 years ago.
They didn't intend a long-time timeshare arrangement, but they did rent their house and travel extensively. Can't remember name of their blog -- or if it is still active. Perhaps Mike or Edie will see this and comment.

Yes, as Dioxide posted above.

Definitely some useful (and entertaining) info posted there.

I am currently using my timeshare almost like an RV replacement... I am on a 7 week trip that included my high school reunion and family reunion... I have always been jealous of the RV's and how they can go around the country. But finally figured out that I can use both HGVMax or Worldmark to travel quiet nicely... And I get great gas mileage compared to RV's

What is the approximate cost of getting Wyndham platinum and at what approximate point level would this be? I wonder if a Worldmark owner with the unlimited HSK (there are a few of these left) would be another good option to consider assuming you can find someone that has one of these…

Truthfully, it's a matter of lifestyle. How much "stuff" do you need?

Hmm. . . Clothes (8-10 changes, plus a few specialized items). A few specialized kitchen items. (kitchenaid mixer, knives, maybe a blender. . . ) Gadgets. I can pack every gadget I need in a carry-on. (Two portable computers, phone, ebook reader, music player, video player (or streaming device), small bag of micro SD chips, recharger for AA and AAA rechargeable batteries).

Two 2 wheeled large suitcases for clothes, gadget bag, box of kitchen utensils. Fits in a car trunk. (of course not recommended for air travel).

Not my lifestyle, but to each their own. . .
