Anyone know about Playa del Sol in Cabo?

We are looking at possibly going here late summer Aug-Sept. as have a week we need to use by then. From what I've seen Playa del Sol Los Cabo is actually in San Jose' del Cabo, we've never be to either of the Cabo's and have no idea what to expect. Apparently this resort is new as of 2006, we have no clear idea of how far is it from "Los Cabo" nor do we really know if that even matters. Is this a nice resort anyone ever been?

We toured the sight back in summer 06. It's being built on to the old Lo Jolla Los Cabos resort. It's in San Jose but not close to the center of town. Cabo is about a 25 min ride from there. It has a nice ocean view but the surf is to ruff to swim. Be careful they don't put you in the older part. The first phase has only just opened so there will be construction going on with other phases. San Jose is quiet which is great if you want to relax.

Los Cabos is a term used to describe the two towns of San Jose del Cabo (where the airport is located) and Cabo San Lucas and the area between them, often referred to as the "corridor."

We toured that resort in 2006, too. It wouldn't be my first choice of places to stay, but it will probably be a clean, comfortable resort. You will most likely want to have a rental car to be able to explore the whole area.

If there's any way you could get an exchange in Cabo San Lucas into any of Pueblo Bonitos, Playa Grande, Cabo Villas, or Villa del Palmar, I think you'd enjoy your first visit to the area much more. But, you will find many different opinions about resorts in Cabo. Everyone has his/her favorite ones. The area is a great place to visit and I'm sure you'll have a good time wherever you stay.

Tripadvisor finally has 2 reviews on it and both are very positive.

Playa Del Sol

Just traded in and read the review here on TUG and the two on tripadvisor.
I am confused, one of the reviews on tripadvisor refers to an older building and that this resort is a converted hotel. The one on TUG implies that the resort is all new construction. Has anyone been there and can shed any light on the true story?
Thanks for the help.

They bought an older resort, La Jolla Los Cabos, and are building on new phases. When I toured they only had a model and a hole in the ground back in July 06 for the new phase.

Playa del Sol

When I called, they said the new gym and spa will be open in January or February and they are currently doing renovations.

I'm not going til August, which is slow time. I guess I'm going to have to request a new room. I'm going to be very upset if they put us in an old room, though. The reviews seem pretty positive. I'd rather stay in a smaller resort than a mega one. That's why I chose this place.

Cabs are cheap to get to the center of San Jose. The resort is just a little out of the way. It has a beautiful beach but the surf is to ruff. Blow off the timeshare reps. If you do chose to attend we got $250 2 blankets and 2 tequilas back in 06. Hold out for more.

Just got back from there

My first visit, and i too, had heard about the 'old building' before i got there. i called the resort a few days before arrival and requested a room in the new building. They said no assignments are made until the day of check in and availibilty. Once there I was given a nice room in the new building, 5th floor and ocean view, the construction was very nice, but the beds are hard ;(

The resort is small in size, but I liked it since it was quiet and there wasn't alot of people around. It sits on one end of the beach from town, with only a handful of other properties between it and the end of the coastline a mile away.
You can walk to the Mega store ( 10-15 mins away) for groceries, a cab ride is $5 back. We rented a car for the week through Fiesta Rent a car ( at the lobby) and that made it nice for us to be mobile whenever we wanted. Cabo San Lucas is 30 min away if you need some more excitement, but we found it to be kind of 'aggressive and it drove us irratible' after a night out. Todos Santos is an hour and a half away , and it is a nice drive up the Pacific coast where you will see lots of cactus and virgin beaches.
We enjoyed being in San Jose, downtown there are many art galleries and intimate restaruants, Thursday night is the 'artwalk' with many wine tastings. We ate out most nights, trying a different place. Morgans, La Botega, and Cynthias just down the street, where all fine places.

The pool is kind of small, but nice. Hardly any kids while we were there ( a plus!) and we swam in the ocean out front with no problem. A little bit of current the first 30' out but it is shallow and if you just relax alittle you are fine.

If you are into partying, this resort is not the place. But if relaxation and a quiet atmosphere is your thing, then this place is just fine.
I'm going back! We are in our 40's and it was a nice vacation ;)

outlaw7, thanks for that good review of Playa del Sol. If you join TUG, please submit your review for inclusion on the TUG review pages. It would really help folks who want to go there in the future.
