Anyone concerned about going to Mexico?

Just wondering what anyone thinks about future visits to Westin villas in Mexico or Mexico vacations in general in light of the recent cartel violence. Is anyone canceling their vacations or going elsewhere in the near term and intermediate term like spring and summer?

It isn't is if cartel violence is new...it's just in the news. But if you're looking to go you might be able to grab some good rental deals (or points/options availability) while it still is in the news.

And actually, I just made reservations at Lagunamar for the first time.

We have a trip planned to Lagunamar in May and haven't cancelled. Interestingly, Marriott Vacations announced that they are planning a new 64 unit timeshare in Puerto Vallarta located with the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa. That wasn't very good timing for them.

No change in plans. We travel to San Jose del Cabo every other winter.

I’ve felt the same way in the 15+ years of ownership. Plenty of other places to get a dose of sun and unique atmosphere..

We did have a Disney Cruise that made a stop in Cozumel, and that was an overall good experience, but it did not increase my desire to spend a full week in a timeshare there.

To each their own. My plans are not changing. If I didn't have plans set for a trip in three weeks somewhere else, now would be a good time to grab some Mexico deals.
I am keeping my November Cabo trip. I plan on adding an extra week. Wanted the Westin but I don't have any traders left

That's the good thing about choices. I have no desire to travel to Asia. Other people can go there and we can go to Mexico.

No real word on anything other than a new property. It was announced in both their Q4 earnings release and the earnings call this morning. Here is the thread in the Marriott forum.

We have two trips planned this year - Cabo in April and Zihuatanejo in October. We don't intend to change course - we travel to Mexico every year and feel very safe there.

I've been on the fence about trying to go to Mexico. This news doesn't exactly make me want to go more. Vidanta fees and forced all inclusive at many other properties at high rates also push me away. AI is basically never worth it for us, we don't eat that much, we don't drink alcohol but they charge like you're going to be doing eating contests while doing keg stands all day long every day.

I'm likely sticking with south Florida for cheap timeshare trips, and some alternative for going south - I might try Belieze as one TUGer talks about, or I'll try somewhere in the Caribbean if I can get a good TS or other deal. During the warmer seasons I am planning on another trip to Europe and maybe going on another long driving trip west - perhaps back to NOLA or Colorado.

Mexico was marginal for me before, and I think this takes it back to "no thanks" - I've got too many places I want to go more.

I've got three Cabo San Lucas trips planned this year. I plan on taking them all unless something changes.

We are keeping our plans for Cabo in early 2027. They are cancellable so this gives us enough time to assess whether to keep or cancel if violence spreads. We love the Westin Cabo and hope to stay there during our trip. We never get AI at the resorts.

The only thing I'm watching is exchange availability into Vidanta. I wouldn't mind scoring a week or two in the Park or Luxxe. Ok Universe, I said it and now it's your turn, lol.

Are they still limited to only Getaways in II? I was interested in checking out their properties but my understanding was that they had high mandatory fees when they were available for exchange. If I recall correctly, the Getaways are expensive because II forced them to bake the fees into the Getaway pricing.

In RCI the Grand Luxxe resort fee is about $1900 for a 1 bed and $2700 for a 2 bed. Then there is the exchange fee and the cost of the exchange week on top of everything. The one bed in RCI extra vacations show up at about $3500 for the 1 bed and $4200 for a two bed.

I haven't looked at the other usual places yet.

I live in Guadalajara and everything returned to normal very quickly. Cabo and Cancun are extremely far away. Sunday was just like a large scale American riot in our region minus a bunch of people in the streets. Just some cars and a few Oxxos got torched. Military casualties throughout the country during the operation and afterwards.
But I get it, I went to Vegas a month after 50 civilians were murdered in under 20 minutes and was a little apprehensive. I’m glad I went, the city wanted me to be there.This is a similar situation minus 50 civilians dying….

I wouldn't hesitate to go on a planned trip to Mexico. We don't have any Mexico planned this year but maybe next year. Trouble can happen anywhere and it's usually not that hard to steer clear of it. As someone else pointed out, we have plenty of mass casualty events in the U.S. I think it is prudent to be as careful about domestic travel as about travel to Mexico. Your odds of being shot are higher right here at home.
