Not out of line, just not very forthright if you're asking about a competitor in your business while masking the true nature of your "innocent" inquiry --- until being "called out" on your being in the very same business...
I understand your feelings. I used to be a conspiracy theorist too.
I have seen many people ask the same kind of question without having to explain why they are asking the question. Although I agree it might be highly interesting to have every person explain exactly why they are asking a particular question, it might lead to much longer posts and more reading time.
I was doing what most people here do--due diligence. I have seen people here ask the same question about my company. I am planning on working with the company I asked about and was looking for recommendations and input from people who know--not an uncommon thing here when someone is considering working with a company in the industry. The title company says Wyndham doesn't have a leg to stand on, because they signed the estoppel letter, and the deed has already been recorded - I hope they are right!
I'm sure VIN will take care of you. I've bought a couple TS's from them and they seemed very reputable to me but sometimes this TS Closing outfit doesn't read the estoppels very well.
