We have been doing more driving trips than ever before. We listened to all of the Joe Pickett and Cassie Dewell books by CJ Box. A new Joe Pickett coming out in February, which is great because I love that series. Cassie Dewell was good, not as good as Joe Pickett, but I enjoyed the books enough to listen and not dose off (I am not driving).

We recently started Amos Decker series by David Baldacci. Very good character. I like when the author builds up a character so you know more about him or her than you know about your next door neighbor. He is a complex character, very tall, very big, former football player. Was hit early in his professional football career so savagely, he was hospitalized and woke up with perfect recal of every minute of his life. Strange phenomena. He is a detective, and his ability to recall the smallest details make him great at what he does to earn a living. He is a sad character, but I won't go into that.

We are always looking for good reads, and preferably audio books because we listen on planes and in our car. I specifically like mysteries and serial characters. I like knowing the character we will be listening to already from previous books.

We have considered Tom Clancy but I read some of his books and am unsure I would find the books good for listening. What do you think? I need something to keep my interest.

I loved Longmire on Netflix. Tried listening to the books. I was pretty bored listening to the reader of the audio books. His voice put me to sleep, plus he sounds really old, and Longmire is not THAT old. Too much description of things too. Weird to the point of making me roll my eyes. Maybe if I read those and didn't listen to them, I would be okay.

We enjoyed the David Wolf series of books by Jeff Carson but stopped when Audible (Amazon) was charging so much per book. The first two we bought got us 7 books and lots of listening. Now "Dire," the 8th book in the series is a buy alone book, and it is just too much to spend for a few hours of listening, and it's not available anywhere but Amazon. Amazon Exclusive, bah humbug!

What audio books can you recommend, preferably in a series? Our library is pretty good with most authors.

I do recommend the Mitch Albom books, pretty much everything he wrote is excellent but these are stand-alone books.

Good to hear a new Joe Pickett will be out soon. Someone donated their entire series to our little community library. I was able to re-read them all…in order this time. I have to say I was very disappointed in the TV adaptation.
Love the Amos Decker series also.
I very much like the author JA Jance. 3 series that I like: Joanna Brady, sheriff of a small Arizona county. JP Beaumont, Seattle detective. Ali Reynolds, news caster turned detective (I think also in Arizona). Not sure if they are on audio.
Jonathan Kellerman, Alex Delaware series, a psychologist in California that spends most of his time helping out his detective friend
Faye Kellerman (wife if Jon); Peter Decker series (another California detective)
again don’t know if they are on audio.

I just finally was able to check out The Wager by David Grann, author of Killers of the Flower Moon.

I use Libby with my county library card and had to wait for it to be available, it's been three months, popular eBook.

William Kent Krueger's Cork O'Connor series.

Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch (et al) series has remained good through many books.

The Longmire series was very good up until he threw in the supernatural stuff. The latest book is back on track, but not as good as those he wrote in 2020 and before.

Tom Clancy's books were great. However, he died in 2013 and his name and characters have been licensed to others. The books he wrote in the 1980-early 90's are worth reading. After that it is all pretty repetitive.
Same thing for me with Daniel Silva's series. The first bunch were good, but then it was all the same. Change the name of the country but it's the same plot.

Louise Penny's books are always a treat. Ditto Robert Parker books (although he too has died and someone else writes the new ones, but he is good ear for Parker's style and characters and has a very similar writing style.

I haven't listened to the audiobooks, but I really like reading the series by Louise Penny that Zentraveler mentioned. Donna Leon's series is set in Venice and I enjoy reading about her character's life in the city and the crazy politics of the police force. The Bruno series by Martin Walker follows the police chief of a small French town and includes lots of details about life in the community (and his cooking skills). Jane Harper's books are set in Australia and give a fascinating look at life there. She has a couple that follow the same
policeman and others that are stand alone books. All of these series focus on solving crimes, but they are not violent or thrillers, just interesting plots and characters.

After watching 3 Body Problem on Netflix my impatience lead me to read (and audiobook) the follow up books in the trilogy; The Dark Forest and Death’s End.

Definitely happy to have the audio books for these as I find reading while listening really helped me to stay engaged with the complex (for me) science concepts.

I too like Martin Walker books. I found the first I read by wandering through my local library shelves. I like his detail about the small French towns and enjoy reading his recipes. I think I have read 4 or 5 now. Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth is one of the best I have read in a long time. It often shows up as a top 20 book. Amor Towles is another writer I enjoy. The first I read was "A Gentleman in Moscow". I have read another couple as well. Michael Connelly is good. I agree that if an author does too many books in a series the stories get weaker. I think they need to mix it up. I have read a number of short stories by Lee Child that are much different than his Jack Reacher series. Quite good.
