Any experience with Cactus Car Rental in Cabo?

We're heading to Cabo and prices for the major car rental companies are very high. I've done a preliminary search on Yelp and TripAdvisor and they seem to have reasonable reviews. Have any Tuggers rented from them and what was your experience? Would you rent again from them? The website states liability insurance included, if I use my Chase Sapphire Preferred to book would that cover me if there is any loss or do I need to buy additional insurance?

We rented from them a few years ago and it went well. I don’t recall how the insurance worked, but we had a good experience with them.

We’ve rented from them many times, their quotes include liability insurance and taxes. I use my chase sapphire reserve to cover the collision damage insurance.

Don't forget to get a quote from Costco (assuming you're a member). Their rates usually can't be beaten.

.

Another option.
Have you tried hertz Mexico? Search for and use the Hertz Mexico website directly not the USA site. It is hertzmexico dot com. When you book directly from the Mexico website, their prices include liability.
I have used them in Cancun and Cabo. I just ran a search and they are about $100 cheaper than cactus for January . I also noticed the earlier you book for both, the cheaper it is. There is a difference in the max liability coverage between the two of that is important to you.
Let us know how you experience goes. Will be there next November and intend on getting a rental.

Costco doesn’t offer rentals from SJD. I’ve used Cactus before and everything went smoothly. I avoid Hertz at all costs in Los Cabos because of crazy add on charges at the end. My go to in the area is Alamo. They have an airport location plus local offices in San Jose and San Lucas.

I have never had any add-on charges with Hertz Mexico. What were the charges

We have rented from them. I recall was a very good and stress free experience! I can’t recall what we did about the insurance. Maybe call or email the credit card company and double check with them?

We rented from the local car rental guys in the Cabo area a few times and had mixed experiences to the point that we don't anymore. I like the major franchises and only rent through an American franchises website as they are bound by their terms and conditions which include the liability and acceptance of our American Express card.

All car rentals in Mexico are required to have the liability insurance. Some companies charge for this, others like Avis, Budget and Hertz usually include this in their rate. The credit card protects the car if you do not accept any of the insurances provided by the franchise. American Express has an enhanced rental car insurance program that requires registering the card in the program for a small fee.

I realize that the major car rental franchises in Mexico have a lot of bad reviews but what isn't revealed in many of the bad reviews is where the person rented the car. If they rented the car through a third party vendor like Expedia , Auto slash or whoever, the Mexican franchise can't verify any insurance products that were bought so those products are not accepted even if a person has proof they bought it. Often times this results in the person buying the the franchise insurance at the counter because the franchise isn't bound by the American franchises website if that person didn't use it.

For Cabo we rent through the Hertz Web Site in the USA.

I went ahead and booked with Cactus. I will report back on my experience

The advantage of Cactus is that the TPL insurance is included. Mexican law requires Third Party Liability (TPL) insurance. This may be included at a minimal level in base rates, but it is more likely to be sold as an upsell by agencies. Important to note that a US insurance or a credit card DOES NOT cover TPL. You cannot buy TPL outside of Mexico; it is sold to you by the rental agency. Your credit card will cover liability and so on, NOT TPL. The rental can look quite low, but TPL adds a few hundred dollars. This is not the case at Cactus. As noted, TPL is included. You know exactly what the price is. If you choose to add liability, that's up to you. I do not because it is covered by my credit card. We had a great experience with Cactus, and I highly recommend them.

Forgot to come back and report on my rental. Everything went smooth. There was a representative outside the airpot with the Cactus sign. Took us to the rental place where we received our car. Car was a little beat up, but with all that road construction I can see why. Very clear on pricing and easy time declining full coverage. No problems returning the car it was quick and easy and got the shuttle back to the airport. Will use them again. Great email communication prior to arrival.

TPL is included if you rent directly with the company in Mexico. For example, if you rent via the Hertz Mexico website, TPL is included. If you rent via the Hertz USA website, TPL is not included. When included the coverage amount will be specified. You can always buy a higher amount if you want.

Most credit cards with CDW coverage in the USA will provide coverage in Mexico. Always check your specific card and obtain a letter from the benefits administrator if possible before the trip.
