Any comments on Kirby vacuums?

My friend recently bought a Kirby Century and loves it. Any tuggers have good or bad experiences? If it truly has a limetime warranty and is as good as a few have told me, it sounds like a pretty good deal at $1200 which is what he paid, as we seem to spend $250 every 3 years.

Regards
Joe

I can't comment on Kirbys but $1200 seems like a pretty big investment. We have had good success with our Dyson at about 1/4 that cost. Ours has been working perfectly for about 13 years now, so I think that's a good amount of service. I did have to replace the hose about a year ago because of some cracks, but I think it was because I would often stretch it too far on our stairs, rather than move the vacuum. The Dyson is pretty heavy, though, if that's a concern.

I loved mine for years, but got sick of it. It was too heavy and it was a pain because it did not have on board attachments. However, I've had it 21 years and I can't kill the sucker! The motors last forever. When we bought it I spent so much on it that I had to promise my DH that I'd have it for years and years and it would be a good investment. Well, the Kirby made good on its claim and now I have to make good on mine.

I brought one 14 yrs ago. Lost all the attachments and the shampoo system was not worth it. I brought a second vacuum (garage sell) for my lower level and it works as well as the kirby.

They are very heavy, but last forever...

I had a Kirby Classic for years and years. Eventually, it got to where it didn't pick up all that well, and the repair wasn't particularly successful. I replaced it with a $60.00 Hoover Tempo (which had excellent ratings from Consumer Reports), and I love it. The Tempo picks up better and is soooooo much lighter. I've only had it about a year, so I can't say how well it will last--but if I had to buy a new one every year, I could do that for a lot of years before I spent $1200. I suspect vacuums are like many other things: newer engineering does make improvements even if the new machine isn't made as well (e.g. plastic here and there instead of metal) as the older machine.

My MIL got a Kirby about 15 years ago for $2000. Seemed so much moola for a heavy vacuum. We've always used fairly low-cost units which did a fine job, and about a year ago got a Dyson which is very low weight and does an excellent job.

The vacuum cleaner is very heavy to lift but very light to operate and the suction is great plus it vibrates to pick up more grit. Our carpet was so plush that we had to return the first vacuum cleaner we bought and we bought two more that couldn't handle the short but plush pile either so I finally bought the Kirby when the salesman demonstrated it.

When my husband came home, he was furious that I had bought it and the salesman offered to take it back but, after the demonstration to my husband, he decided to keep it but the salesman gave our other two vacuum cleaners back so that reduced the price quite a bit. We still have it but no longer need a Kirby but it still works great. It must be 20 years old or more.

My kirby is still going strong after 20+ years, take it in for an occasional tune up.

First thing I thought was "heavy", like so many people here posted. I had one, that I got used, for several years and about 20 years ago sold it to a commercial cleaning guy who for all I know still has it.

Grew up using Kirby. Agree it's too heavy. Prefer Dyson.

We have not owned a Kirby in many many years but last one was way to heavy and not worth near the price back then and it wasn't $1200. What you paid seems way out of line because we own two different units, one for upstairs and second for down stairs and together only cost us about $450.00. If they only lasted three years {Two different brands}we could replace and still not spend $1200 and they both work great and have for few years now. :ponder:

The problem I see in our area is that Kirby drops off the biggest low-lifes in a area and they spend the day knocking on doors offering these Kirby units for $1200. They show up many times during Super Bowl or World Series which really ticks me off. They lie about the product and say anything to get in your home to show you how well it works.:crash:

Couple years ago a girl came to our door and offered a free cleaning of our home and wife asked why and what was she selling. She stated she was selling nothing but this was a presentation by Kirby so you might buy one of their units later. My wife fell for this and next thing you know she tells me to come upstairs and handle this. The girl takes off and we get this really fat black guy looking like he hasn't been near a bath tub in months sitting on the floor trying to put together this new unit.:annoyed:
I walked up and ask him why he needed to put the unit together so he could show how well the unit worked when he would already have a unit to show us. His response was I need to have the new one so when you buy it it is new!

I told him to get his stuff back in the box and get out of the house. I told him I don't like the bait and switch from the young girl to him and when asked what they were selling was told nothing. He responded with this unit starts at $1200 and goes up to $1600 and the point of cleaning our house was for us to buy a unit from him and my wife must have misunderstood the girl. I told him I was standing there and heard the girl lie to my wife. He had the nerve to then tell me how great this price was and that three of my neighbors had already bought one. I asked him for their name and address and I will walk with you over to their house and ask them with you. I was then called couple cus words as he left.

Later we found him and the girl and couple others sitting on the sidewalk waiting for the pickup truck to pick them up. Kirby have returned on many Sundays knocking at the door with same game plan. I know my neighbors have called the police several times on them and it has now been about five months of not being bothered by Kirby door to door sales people. There was several write-ups in our local paper about them and police reports of running them out of town.:deadhorse:

This kind of treatment at my door and sleeze balls they hire and $1200 doesn't lean me toward ever buying a Kirby product!
