Sell of firearms and ammunition is sky rocketing. A major gun store in Idaho had its stock almost depleted. They had to limit sales to two handguns and one MSR (assault rifle) per day per person. Also limitations on ammunition. What is really scary is some of the people buying guns. Read one story where an 80 some woman bought a handgun. She had never owned or handled a firearm of any type in her life. No training or classes on the use and safety of firearms. But she now has her handgun in her night stand. Now don't get me wrong I believe in the 2nd Amendment. But this scenario ends in only a couple ways. Best option she never takes the handgun out of her night stand and it is still there when she passes quietly in her sleep. Her house is broken into and the burglar takes her handgun away and uses on her. She hears a noise at her front door and shoots through the door hitting a neighbor or LEO doing a welfare check.

People are panicking and it is sad. My guess is many are buying guns to protect their home and food thinking the virus can cause severe shortages and financial distress causing others to commit crimes by breaking into homes.

Yeah, used to be people thought "they're coming for your guns" but now you need a gun because "they're coming for your TP".

Seriously, tho, sure, I'm fine with Responsible gun ownership. I personally do not like them and would likely not be able to pull the trigger on someone. Sure, I like to think that in a kill or be killed situation, I could do it. But more likely, I would hesitate and my own gun would be used against me.

I have held a CC permit for about two years but to date, I have not opted to actually carry. That decision will be reviewed if things start to feel different in and around the places I have to frequent.

I am an advocate for responsible gun ownership to mitigate the mentally ill shooters and sometimes for self defence. Walking away from conflict or potential danger is always the preferred action over confrontation. Once you shoot someone your life becomes complicated and stressful - a financial and mental drain.

I’ll play devil’s advocate here. I am anti-guns. If it were up to me, they would not exist. I do not see good reasons for guns except to kill people and animals.

We probably need to be careful with this one as per TUG's rules on discussion of hot button topics but allow me to add this: one of the reasons I sought a CC permit was the fact that I am a sports referee. With the many stories we read about fan violence against referees and officials, I wanted to have this option for protection - and hope that I would never need it.

If there are no guns in the hands of public, like in Singapore, then I would agree with you 100%. I am anti-gun too. But even if 2nd Amendment is changed which is highly unlikely, how do you get firearms out of all the criminals and mentally ill owners? Since there are lots of firearms out there, how do you protect yourself against others using it on others and you?

I have owned firearms for 45+ years. I have carried for most of the last 30 years. First as a Deputy District Attorney assigned to a Special Narcotics Team. Then years after I changed jobs some of the people I sent away for long periods of time started getting out. Some of these remembered me and made threats. For the last 5 years it has gotten crazy. Shootings in Churches, shooting in stores, shooting in restaurants, etc. I carry all the time. As does Patti. I have CCW's from 4 States. Due to reciprocal agreements between States I can carry in about 40 States.

Before you carry you have to be absolutely certain you can use it to defend yourself and others. There are no "warning shots," " no warning stop or I will shoot," etc. If you fear for your life or another's life then it is draw and fire.

Frankly, I am grateful to people that will be the good guy with a gun that stops the bad guy with a gun.

My brother is one of those also.

I will meanwhile be trying to shove kids and old ladies out the exit.

As someone who has spent his entire adult life in law enforcement, let me give you my view.

I think people should think more about taking care of themselves and relying less on government. You're badly mistaken if you believe that banning guns will prevent violent crime. Those laws have very little or absolutely no affect on criminals, but do affect law abiding citizens. Total gun control will never happen in the U.S. We cannot have a gun-free America anymore than an alcohol-free America. Gun free zones have never to prevented anything because criminals don't care.

We need to abandon the idea that we can manage violent crime by controlling guns. That has not worked and cannot work.

This being a very complex issue, we could both exchange sites that back up our opinions. I really don't feel the need to that though. Should you ever encounter a situation where your life is on the line, I'm sure if you ask real nice, they will let you just walk away. Been there, done that, my friend and guess what, they won't. ;)

@Brett - to put the ball back in your court (so to speak) how do you address this issue?

Pretty much every one in my family has fire arm training and those that are old enough have their permits. I'm glad that in Washington a person has to wait 10 days, be 21 and have completed a gun safety course to purchase most guns.

One thing many people with guns don't realize is shooting at a person is only for self defense. Not to protect a car, stash of tp or any material item.
