Anipryl for aging dogs

Anipryl is used to treat Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, a senility syndrome in dogs. It is primarily used to slow progression of disease, although initially it may help to improve symptoms somewhat. There is a human generic which is less expensive than the veterinary srug, it is called selegeline. The medication is not a wonder drug but can be somewhat helpful in patients who actually have CCD, as opposed to some other disease.

The symptoms of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction may be mimicked by other conditions- most notably a brain tumor, less commonly encephalitis, and metabolic disorders such as liver dysfunction and low blood sugar (usually caused by a tumor of the pancreas called an insulinoma). Chronic vascular comprise to the brain may be a cause of CCD and this in turn may be caused by hypertension or hypothyroidism (in dogs hypothyroidism is one of the few causes of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries).

The typical tests recommended prior to starting Anipryl and routine health screen (CBC, chem panel, urinalysis), thyroid testing, blood pressure screening, liver function testing (blood test called a bile acids). A brain MRI +/-CSF anaylsis are recommended, although some people elect not to pursue because of cost and the requirement for anesthesia.

Anipryl for Cats

We have been using a smaller dose of Selegiline (Anipryl) for our cat for the past 2 years. She was having horrible seizures and we were unsure if she would live. Our vet prescribed this drug as a last ditch effort and it worked like a charm - no seizures but it took quite a long time to figure out the correct dosage to control the dementia. She just turned 14 which is a good sign for a Maine Coon.

Seizures are not seen with cognitive dysfunction (which is also not a recognized syndrome in cats). Far more likely if seizures are present along with dementia is a brain tumor. The most common brain tumor in a cat is a meningioma, which if operable, can be cured with surgery.

Now many people may not consider brain surgery for a cat, and that is a fine decision. In that scenario, it is reasonable to treat symptomatically with whatever meds help.

from Dogtor J (John Symes DVM)

"The GARD – The Glutamate & Aspartate Restricted Diet – continues to halt seizures in dogs and people as well as help treat a myriad of neurological disorders when applied properly. The latter is the key. Some individuals require an extreme degree of vigilance. Think “peanut allergy” when attempting to grasp the sensitivity that some develop to these lectins. I just wrote a piece on “secondary food intolerance”, which is the term I use to describe the lectins of the “big 4″ we acquire when we eat the meat of animals consuming them (especially wheat, soy and corn). This is not covering my derriere…this is now proven fact.
There are many factors in the development of this “syndrome” we call epilepsy. One component is clearly a genetic virus. There are other acquired viruses and pleomorphic bacteria that can be involved along with food lectins, malabsorption/malnutrition, free radicals from chemicals/pollutants, vaccines, seasonal variants, fluorescent lights/computer graphics/etc. and more. But when we identify these things and remove them, we can undermine the syndrome and miracles can happen. I no longer put any limitations on what this body can do, only what WE can do for our body."

Not exactly on topic, but related to aging dogs

Mine developed arthritis in her ankles, so bad she wouldnt walk. The vet treated her with adequan. Eight shots over a 4 week period. By the third shot she was walking again. and now she runs and plays like a puppy..Amazing stuff, but the vet wont treat me.
