Has anyone stayed at this resort? Should we request a specific view or floor? We will be exchanging in Mar 3 and would love to hear any suggestions as to things not to miss while we are there. Thanks!

We'll spend a day in Key West for sure and probably check out Marathon and Islemarada one day. We are definitely open to suggestions or recomendations for restaurants and fun things to do. TIA

The "search" function is your friend...

I believe you will easily find a wealth of exisiting Florida Keys input to wade through, much of it quite current, if you just conduct a "search"...

Unit 302??

We have been assigned unit 302. I'm thinking third floor at the end of the building. A little higher would be good but I'm thinking this is a good location.

We stayed here couple summers ago. The units all face the water so you can watch the boats going in and out. All the patios are screened in so some of my pics look a little blurr.

I don't remember what floor we were on maybe in the middle, Units are roomy but nothing fancy, clean and clean grounds, small pool and hot tub. Staff was friendly and helpful.

We found a neat little beach in Marathon Key called Sombrero Beach (see pics).
The drive to Key West is long so leave early.

We are going back in early September staying at Bluegreen's Hammocks Marathon Resort and will definitely drive out to Key West this time.

Also forgot to mention if you will be driving down the Florida Turnpike be sure to get a Florida Sunpass. Down in the southern area there is noone manning the gates. This has been discussed on TUG before.

I'm no expert on beaches in the Keys but Sombrero Beach was the best I ever ran accross.

George

We thought so too (see pics). We plan to spend some time there again when we go down there. Jim did a little snorkling off the beach there but wasn't all that great. But we will take our stuff with us again just in case we want to snorkle. I am not sure I can get in and out of a boat if we were to take a tour. Since I got sick, I have to be real careful of my back.

You actually don't have to have Sunpass - the unmanned plazas in South Miami-Dade will read your plate and bill you that way. It is a new system - pay by plate. However, you can buy a Sunpass sticker for just $5 and you will save about 25 cents on each toll plaza, so the pay by plate would be more. Just depends whether you think the savings is worth it. The stickers are not transferrable, so if it is a rental car it will be a one time use. You can buy the more expensive transponder for $25 that can transfer between vehicles which may be worth it if you plan on making multiple trips.

Just be aware that the account has to be set up online or via phone for the Sunpass to work. This can be done at the Rest Areas too. Some of the set ups are instant - some are not and you have to wait 24 hours. Publix and CVS also carry SunPass.

I admit, I did work for FDOT at one point, but the reason why I know about the SunPass is we have come back into the state several times recently in a one way rental - we forgot the transponder at home and had to stop and buy one. Now we are the owners of several SunPass transponders/stickers and have learned about setting it up on the fly.:doh:

Do you know if you can buy the sunpass in Panama City Beach. I had one on my windshield but we upgraded to a new car so I guess I will have to buy another one. We will be in Panama City Beach in July but not going to the Keys until September so thought I might get it ahead of time. I do have an account from my original one.

I would guess you could probably get one in Panama City. SunPass works on State of FL toll roads/bridges - not just the TPK - so it is likely there are some in that area as well. I would try Publix or CVS. There should be information online about the different locations where you can buy it.

The other thing you can do is purchase it online - I believe they will ship it to you.

Thanks, I know I can get one online. If we can't get one while we are there we will get it online. The one we purchased the first time we got the cost credited back to our account to use but I don't see that offer online anymore. Maybe they did away with it. Do you know??

Yes, unfortunately they did do away with that.................I guess all good things come to an end. That is probably when they were still introducing the program and encouraging people to buy the SunPass. They also did away with the Sunpass devices that beep when you go through the toll, letting you know they registered. Now they have no battery and are silent, or they are the sticker.

We have had to stop twice in the Gainesville area (just before the beginning of the TPK) to buy a SunPass in the last few months as we were driving back from Houston and of course left our SunPass in our own vehicle. If you don't have SunPass in the northern parts of the TPK, you have to have cash - as they do not do "pay by plate", and they do not accept cards. You also have to wait in lines at the toll plazas during busy times. It isn't a cheap drive - even with Sunpass. We bought a regular transponder the first time for $25 and a sticker the second time for $5.00. Don't know whether you can sell the transponder? The sticker I know goes with the car.

Good luck and hope that helps a bit. Never thought I would learn so much about the SunPass system. You should definitely get your money's worth out of your SunPass purchase on your drive though.:cool:

I did have one on my other car and I peeled it off when we traded it in but I know I can't use it again. I just checked my account and I still have .30 on there. But this trip is going to cost us $40.70 down and back maybe more plus $5 for the sticker, I guess. oh well, part of vacation!!
