So as has been long discussed, there are many sides to a story. The protests, distasteful attitudes, and activism have been successful in scaring tourists from Maui. The occupancy numbers have shown this. Here is a story from the other side, the local residents that are struggling to pay for housing, while struggling to make money. Simply stated, Hawaii cannot survive without relatively high tourism.

A lot of businesses that are still in existence have a hard time finding help as a lot of workers have gone to the mainland.

Yup. Everyone young has been priced out of Hawaii. There is no affordable future in Hawaii for those starting out anymore, imo. West Maui is even worse for the young because of the fires even though the owners were awarded over 4 billion USD last Summer. Interesting is being awarded is based on contingencies so no one probably received anything yet.

County and State really need to be driver in affordable housing initiatives. The counties idea of limited Short-term rentals is not the silver bullet.
