Amtrak will let you buy your own train car and attach it to any route you want

I'll keep that in mind.

This could become a new timeshare railroad travel model and a new tax shelter for the one percent bracket. LOL
Example:
A week in your own Amtrak hotel rail passenger train car from Washington DC to Charleston, South Carolina or from Charleston, South Carolina to Miami, Florida. LOL I guess I have to much time doing nothing LOL!

I would love to own one. Perhaps I can sell all my timeshares to generate the cash to buy one.

Reminds me of the 1880's. Didn't the really rich have their own Pullmans?

While that is when private railcars started, you don't have to go back that far. Very wealthy people, railroad executives, and some large corporations, had private railcars as late as the 1960s. Once air travel became fast, common, and relatively inexpensive in the early 70s, the private railcar became much less "necessary", although some still do exist.

I worked with a girl in the mid-late '70s who together with her fiancé was a 'train nut'. They could tell the type of engine from the whistle and knew what type of locomotive it was just by looking at it. For their honeymoon they had arranged for a private rail car (sitting & sleeping area) to be connected to various CP Rail trains and were travelling across Canada from Ontario to BC and back. They purchased a house outside of Toronto that had a rail line running behind the back yard.
