We just got an exchange through Interval International to Villas de Santa Fe for September 2019. We're hoping to take Amtrak from Los Angeles to Albuquerque or Lamy. My question is, which direction has the better views during daylight?

I'm a little confused by the question. Are you asking which direction either Los Angeles to New Mexico or New Mexico to Los Angeles would have the better views?

How are you planning to get to Santa Fe from Albuquerque or Lamy? Lamy is very small. I would imagine there is a car rental agency there, but have no idea what kind of inventory they would have.

Because I was curious I went in and looked at the Amtrak site. It looks like you would only be in daylight at the end of the trip, going from Los Angeles to Lamy. There is a shuttle that runs from Lamy into Santa Fe. On the return trip you'd start out during the day, then most of the trip would be in the dark. So, from what I'm seeing, you get the daylight during the same portion of the trip in either direction. I hope that makes sense.

You correctly interpreted the not very well worded question. I did the same thing you did and came to the same conclusion. Thanks for your effort! I'm hoping someone who's made the trip both ways will opine. Sometimes you see more in one direction; for example, the Columbia Gorge coming from East to West has better views than going from West to East, IMO. Also, it looked like there may be a time change that could affect things.

There is a time change between California and New Mexico. New Mexico is in Mountain Time, which is one hour ahead.

Sometimes you can find reviews, or information on the Amtrak website, that will give you the information you're looking for if you don't get an answer here.

Enjoy your time in Santa Fe. We stayed at the Villas de Santa Fe a couple of times before we moved here. Nice place, good location.
