I do have an account, but only reactivate it when a class reunion is coming up....otherwise I’ll be in the dark about what’s going on.

I did give it a try, but didn’t see the point after a while. I really got turned off when Something with the security went haywire and all kinds of private messages were sent claiming to be from my friends.

I’m really annoyed because our township expects us to go to facebook for the latest virus updates. Why can’t they just post things on their regular website?

When I was using Facebook I “liked” Joann Fabrics” and another store, maybe Michaels Crafts. Every day my page was so cluttered with ads and unwanted stuff it gave me a headache.

I still prefer old fashioned email (and texting) and regular websites for my favorite hobbies and news. My daughter says many of her friends are using Facebook less and Instagram more. I don’t know anything about Instagram, except when I see a news story about an Instagram model....and I don’t realky get that either.

I sound like my parents.

No, you aren’t. I don’t either and for pretty much the same reasons as you.

I don't have an account. I get all my family news through my wife. She has an account and is friends with all my family members. I think a lot of small communities use Facebook is because they can get news out faster than they can updating a website. They may also need to pay someone to update the website, but there is no extra charge to just post something on Facebook.

No, you're not the only one. I know my sil doesn't, and my bil doesn't either. Oh and my older dd has an account but she hardly ever goes in and uses it.

I started using it when it was the only way I could get ahold of my younger dd when she was away at school. Since then I've used it to connect with old friends, people I haven't seen in years (and ended up meeting up with a couple of them).

Nope. I hate Facebook. I feel like a bit more of my privacy is lost with it. I like my anonymity.

I do have a Facebook account with a fake name just so I can access some Facebook conferences. It has no friends and I never post from it.

Nomore, you’re not the only one. I’ve never had an account and don’t want one or see the point. My wife and 1 of my daughters use it and post plenty of pics about our life and family.
Nothing annoys me more than when I talk to a friend or colleague and tell them about something I did over the weekend and they say....”I know, I saw it posted on FB”.
When friends ask me why aren’t you on FB, you can reconnect with old friends from HS and college, i say “if I wanted to be friends with them and know what’s going on with them since 40+ years ago, I would be friends...not on FB.
I see no benefit to signing up.

Oh I just thought of another good use I've made of Facebook recently. I had some questions for airlines, or issues I needed resolved. Phone waits were horrendous. So I reached out on FB, got instant response and in all cases my questions were answered and issues resolved.

You are not alone. You are not old fashioned. In fact most of the teen and twenty crowd thinks of Facebook as where they contact their teacher or a grandparent.

I value privacy. I work in the Silicon Valley and realized almost a decade years ago that information on Facebook wasn't private and Facebook was going to be using my private information for whatever they wanted. So I never posted anything. I lurk when I cannot get the info elsewhere.

I may try @Luanne idea for facebook to contact airlines. Based on @Luanne' s idea I successfully used my Twitter to PM them and they responded right away. Much faster than chat.

I am really put off that Facebook is accepting paid political advertising after all that transpired in 2016. Profits over doing the right thing. Who knows what private info they are sharing with their political advertisers.

You have identified all the right reasons to avoid.

No, you're not the only one. Facebook is what you make of it, and what you're willing to put up with. Getting targeted ads is what they do. You don't even have to Like a certain page. Just Google something to buy, or visit a retail clothing store's website, and you'll see ads for that all over your web browser and Facebook feed for days afterwards. Some websites have ad banners - you'll see the same kind of targeted ads there, too. So you're not missing much.

A friend's teenage daughter says, "Facebook is for old people. Instagram is ok, Twitter is good, but Snapchat is better." And now that she's discovered TikTok, she's even more unavailable to real people. It's an online attitude that is very different than it used to be.

I was at a Home Show a few months ago, and a salesman for a cell phone provider (I think it was Sprint) threw a line at me as I was walking by. He said, "You're paying too much for your cell service!" I replied, "No, I'm not." He said, "How much do you pay?" I said, "$20 a month - Consumer Cellular." He did a major eye roll, and said, "You get what you pay for." And I said, "Exactly! It's all I need. Why should I pay you for something I won't use?" And I walked off. I don't watch movies or play games or music on my phone. I use it for phone calls (remember those?), text messages, checking email, and taking the occasional picture. I don't need to be online 24/7. :)

not everyone or every organization has a "regular website"

but if you don't know what you're missing - no problem :)

I have a FB account and I do not post anything on it. I use it to get feeds from my friends who live half way across the world. They also use WhatsApp to keep each other informed of what is going in everyone's lives.

You're not alone. I can't think of anything I'd want to post and have no desire to live my life online, nor do I have the time to post or look at others' pages. However, out of necessity, I have a business page for the writers conference I own and direct. It's a pain to post 3x a week.

I didn't have one until a couple of years ago when I discovered that our family was making plans there that we didn't hear about until sometimes too late. After joining and mostly lurking for a year, I discovered that there were groups about some hobbies I found worthwhile, and also connections with old friends I'd lost track of. All of these are very satisfying and almost never political.

There's a local "talk" group for our community that I monitor on FB. Until two months ago it was all about "where can I buy firewood" and "my cat is missing" and "please contribute to the food drive." But since then it has morphed, even though it's not supposed to consider political subjects. I've had to ignore a few, which had never happened before.

I don’t Facebook. I made an account a few years ago under a false name so I could access the Tradewinds website prior to our French Polynesia trip. Now I access a union page from work for updates since Covid 19. I don’t post , no pictures, I don’t even really know how to navigate the site. It really disturbs me all the “possible” friend suggestions. I know many nurses have been fired after posting . It’s definitely not for me.

I have an account under an alias to check on groups that discuss the airplanes I own. Some useful stuff at times.

Other than that, no other groups, friends or other connection. Never used or read Twitter, Tik Tok, Instagram Pinterest, etc.

Cheers

Using a fake name is a violation of the Facebook Terms of Service. It seems that using real names keeps people more accountable, but makes them easier advertising marks.

Well to be honest I have no imagination. My fake name is part of my last name first and my full first name last . So just a variation of my name.
But who cares, really.? If I could access what I wanted without having to put in a single piece of my own info Facebook might be more useful to me. I am not of the belief that Facebook policy out ways my personal privacy.

@x3 skier I , too, have a fake FB account that I use to surveil my suburban “neighborhood” groups. You want to see crazy? Join one of those. Outrage over grass clippings, garbage can placement, neighbors with too many cars, on and on.

I belong to NextDoor which is akin to your "neighborhood" groups. I feel your pain...

I resisted NextDoor until 2 weeks ago. Talk about political posts on social media. They fight like cats and dogs and I do not partake. Oh, and I created my account using a fake name. When it asked if I allowed it to access my contact list, I said heck no. It knows nothing about me. LOL
