"With more than a month left in the college football season, over a dozen universities are already on the hook for a record $228 million in buyouts to 15 fired football coaches, and much of this will be financed by tax-deductible donations from alumni.

"It’s unlikely that when Congress created the charitable tax deduction a century ago, it envisioned it as a tool to subsidize losing college football programs.

“Why should the Federal government subsidize the athletic activities of educational institutions when that subsidy is being used to help pay for escalating coaches’ salaries, costly chartered travel, and state-of-the-art athletic facilities?”

The Federal Government
US Tax Dollars
Subsidies

That is money collected from you and me
Our Tax dollars

Football coaches are often the highest paid employees at institutes of higher learning

By what stretch of the imagination are these sports programs in need of "charitable" contributions

Did Bear Bryant ever make 15 million dollars per year coaching at Alabama?

I agree with your sentiments, but most of the money paid to coaches comes from businesses and millionaires/billionaires that support the university, not taxpayer dollars. I believe all states have laws limiting the salaries of state employees.

No. But, even Bear worked for businesses that provided a big portion of his income. Coca-Cola and Golden Flake paid Bear to do a weekly hour long televised game review every Sunday afternoon. It was must watch TV when I was a teenager. He broke down the game film from the past game and it was fantastic! I don't know how much he was paid, but it wasn't enough. :D

Actually most of the money paid to college coaches comes from a 501(c) (3) tax deductible organization, i.e. a charity or religion.

Yes, football is a religion in Alabama. 🤣

I am in favour of eliminating all charitable tax write offs. Donate the money if you want to but do not make others chip in for it. A lot of other cases of fraud.
