One of the reasons Alaska Airlines has only one flight a day to many locations is they are eliminating all of the turbo prop aircraft this year. They will be replaced with the Embraer E175 jet which will have room in the cabin for carry on luggage.

Here is a more complete discussion of Alaska/Horizon and the Embraer E175 aircraft.

Now, it should be noted that while Horizon will apparently convert to only E175 aircraft, some Horizon flights are operated by SkyWest. The announcement says nothing about SkyWest flights, so I presume that flights operated by SkyWest might still use other aircraft.

Years back, when Horizon switched to the Q400s, those Q400s replaced some even smaller turbo props. At that time they reduced the number of flights to many local airports - it was cheaper to provide a single flight with a larger plane. So this is just a natural evolution.

Horizon will probably still have some routes with insufficient traffic to operate the E175s. I suspect those routes will be operated by SkyWest.

It will be interesting. The flight from YKM to SEA might be less than 30 minutes is what I read some where. Supposedly we go back to three flights a day but I'm sure you are right in that it will depend on demand. I hadn't considered that the new aircraft might carry more passengers than the old.

I'm pretty sure the E175s have more seats than the Q400s. Horizon recently started direct service to Idaho Falls from SEA, and when I last flew, they were using Q400s for that flight.

The E175s also have at least a small galley, and a much more functional bathroom than the Q400s.
