I was looking at flying from St. Louis to Williamsburg in late May/early June and the airfares are $320 and up flying into Norfolk or Richmond. Flights to DC were not significantly less to warrant the drive. Are there any other major airports within a few hours of Williamsburg? If we cannot get a good price/schedule combination, we just may go ahead and drive the 14 hours....but I thought maybe Tuggers would have some good strategies.

norfolk would usually be your cheapest

you could also check BWI--but you are looking at 4-5 hours to get to wllmbg.

Check Air Tran and South West Airlines.

Air Tran fly into Newport News, Williamsburg Airport which is the about 30 miles from Williamsburg.

South West fly into Norfolk, VA.

Elaine is a slow driver or only drives during rush hour.

It is typically 1.5 hours from BWI to my house on I-95

no, I'm not a slow driver---I live 25 miles S of DC right off of I-95. Minimum on a great day from BWI to my house is 1 hour--on a average day 1.5 hours--in rush (only did that once)--3 hours.
From my house to wllmbg is 2.5 hours if you drive as fast as you can without getting a ticket.
So, if all the stars align---3.5 hours--more realistic is 4, assuming not much traffic and no delays along the way.
PS--IMHO--I hate the drive from BWI to VA--congested and some part of the road will be torn up along the way.

Except during rush hour I do BWI in 35minutes and Wmbg in 2.5hrs so 3hrs5minutes doing 9miles over the limit is what it takes me.

PHF is definitely the closest, but make sure that you are doing an all in comparison when booking. Make sure you count the rental car as part of the cost. You may be able to get a better rate at a specific airport and swing the cost. Also, the DC area airports are going to have many more arrivals and departures into St. Louis.

Thanks for all your great ideas. I am still working on getting the best fare for the days we can go.....I will let you know the results.

Raleigh (RDU) used to have non-stop flights from St. Louis and it would be approx a 3 hr. drive to Williamsburg on interstates not going through any major cities.

The best choice of schedule/fare on the Friday of Memorial weekend is STL to Baltimore arriving at 4 PM.

I am wondering how long that drive from Baltimore airport to Williamsburg becomes at 5 o'clock on a Friday of a holiday weekend......would that be a nightmare? If so, I will switch to the more expensive flight arriving at 9 PM into Richmond.

Thanks for all your great advice!!!

Sounds like a miserable drive

I did an quick search using sidestep.com and found non stop fares to Newport News starting at $281.

Yes, instead of 3hr15min you could easily double the time on that Holiday weekend Friday.

Thanks for all the great advice!! Wanted to let you know that I appreciate all of your help on this one.

Upside:

1) We will be flying round trip St. Louis to Norfolk for only $138 per person.... (woohoo!!!)....
2) We will be avoiding the long commute to/from Washington or Baltimore

Downside:

1) flights have one short stop
2) early times....6AM flights

We felt the upsides outweighed the downsides since we are traveling as a group of 5 people for a quick 5 day trip to Williamsburg. Nonstop, later flights were $250 and up. If there had only been 2 of us, we may have chosen the more convenient flights.
