DW and I will be spending a week in the Mayan in Nuevo Vallarta at the end of November 2012.
Does anyone knows when will be a better time to purchase airplane tickets from NYC to Puerto Vallarta?
Is airfare less expensive if purchased in the summer for Mexico and does it follow some low season-high season rule or it doesn't really matter, especially with the rising cost of gas/kerosene?

Either buy your ticket soon, or roll the dice and wait after summer hopefully crude will come down per barrell.

I would buy your flight now, then track it using yapta.com , if the flight drops in price, you may be entitled to a refund of the difference. Some airlines give this for any diff in fare, some if it drops more than $50, others at $150 difference.

The way I look at it, if you book now and the price drops, but not enough to get a refund your out $100 or so, times 2 if you count the wife. But if you wait and they shoot up in price, you will likely be out more money. I'd take the lesser of two evils.

I'm going to Nuevo Vallarta next Thanksgiving. Air fare has risen dramatically. I was trying a number of different strategies such as finding the cheapest direct flight from a US city, and then seeing if I could get a discount domestic flight to that city from Philly or NYC. It just doesn't seem to work, but if anyone has some ideas, I'm all ears!

What happens with air fares depends very much on what happens with fuel prices. Air fares have risen because fuel costs have risen. If fuel prices go down, fares will drop.

Your strategy, then, should depend on what you think will happen with fuel prices going forward from here.
