Air traffic control absences surge, hitting almost half of major US airports

I was traveling last week. My outbound on Monday was not affected but my inbound was delayed by an hour due to staffing shortages. The plane that came from Houston to pick us up was late but we were able to board quickly. We actually boarded the plane and taxied to the runway but had to hold for 30 minutes due to updated instructions from Houston ATC.
Since I was heading home on a direct flight, it didn't bother me too much. However, there was a young man on my flight who had a connecting flight that he will likely miss depending on if that connecting flight boarded on time or not. He was last seen racing down the hall after grabbing his gate checked bag (we came from a small airport, small plane).

I was trying to get home last Friday and my flight that was supposed to leave ATL at 9:40am did not leave till 4:18pm that day and once we got onboard our flight attendant told me that we are the last flight departing due to shortages for quite awhile that day

Welp, guess I'm going to avoid flying again for a while.

If I have to fly, it will be in my own plane that doesn't have to connect with the ATC System. OTOH, it only cruises at 110 MPH so it will take a bit longer ;) And weather dependent.

Just not a good deal for anyone....

Flew out of Las Vegas this morning
Everything was running smoothly at 6:00 AM
"FlightAware Misery Index" was very low across the country at that point
If you are concerned about delays, weather, staffing problems
Search for: Flight Aware Misery Index
It will give you a great snapshot of commercial flight issues across the country
In real time
You can also dig deeper for other parts of the world if you are traveling internationally

We were going to fly to DC today at stay at HGVC District for 4 nights. We canceled due to the air traffic control delays and most of the big tourist attractions in DC are shut down.

Both IAH and Hobby have experienced intermittent ground stops, mostly in the afternoon and evening, during the last week or so, but fortunately our flights to and from HNL were unaffected. Nor were our interisland flights in Hawaii. We thanked multiple TSA agents for being at work for us.

It was the sick-out by ATC that ended the last shutdown, so maybe this is a good thing?

Flights 10/22 CLE-DEN-GJT on time and full.

Flights 10/31 GJT-DEN boarded on time, sat on tarmac 45 minutes, arrived DEN at gate 86/concourse B 10 minutes prior to boarding start of DEN-CLE flight at gate16/concourse B. It wasn't easy to traverse that distance in the time the United app indicated but we did it, even with one of the moving walkways not moving!

Credit to the TSA agents and ATCs at both departure airports.

DGS is a TSA agent. My DiL posted that he had issues using his health insurance to get his prescribed meds due to shutdown- one more thorn in the side.

I flew out of Newark to MCO and back - 10/15 and 10/22 with no issues.

Hoping for the same end of month......but things are changing daily.

TSA agents now calling out too. At IAH yesterday screening time was 4 hours. This morning, it is currently showing 3 hours on the airport's website.

You cannot get back pay, if you don't work.

You cannot get back pay, if you don't work.

If your absence is due to a sick call, you will still get sick pay. Just simply calling in without a reason is not an option.
The managers have the task of triaging sick calls which is not an easy task due to privacy restrictions.
It's a mess all around. Many people live paycheck -to-paycheck and they have to seek other sources of income during a shut down if they are not going to be paid to cover their bills.
