Hi,

We joined HGV Max US collection 2 years ago. We are new to timeshares. We have the annual 5500 points package and have figured that it doesn’t get us much at times we want to vacation.

Question 1 : what is the best way (cheapest and easiest) to add to these points? Probably 4000 - 5000 more. Looking at Resale options.

Question 2 : A timeshare upgrade salesperson in Hawaii told us that the Hawaii collection is better and offered to move us from US Collection to Hawaii if we bought more points from Hilton directly in Hawaii collection. Is the Hawaii collection better and valued more (50 Percent more)?? Seemed like a sales pitch to get us to buy more points but thought I would check.

Thanks a lot for your views.

So you have points in Diamond? Resale is limited to the collection you bought it in, so do you want to go in the US or in Hawaii? More specifically, where exactly do you want to go? Do you really want to stay in Diamond? Diamond / DRI / HGV is not that great as it's got high MFs I think, but for ~ $3,800 MFs you can grab DIAMONDS US COLLECTIONS 7,500 POINTS ANNUALLY, FREE USE 2024 on ebay right now for $1.00 and $95 closing costs. I.e. the points are free resale - mostly because there are usually better deals in other systems.

I might suggest doing resale and compare Legacy HGVC, Worldmark and Wyndham for what's likely to be lower MFs on offer with less restrictions resale and at least some better resorts.

Developer Purchased Points and Resell Points can not be combined to make a single Reservation. Points are Points. It does not matter which Collection. Though traditionally the Hawaiian Collection has higher Maintenance Fees. We started out with Developer Points in the Hawaiian Collection. Added Resell Points in the Hawaiian Collection for zero dollars. How we handled the can not Combine Developer Points and Resell Points into a single Reservation was to Book "X" Days with our Resell Points. Then with our Developer Points we made a Consecutive Reservation in same sized Unit for "Y" Days to add up to 2 weeks. Because the Reservation was Consecutive and same sized Unit they did not make us move. Later we changed to Cabo Azul with a small purchase of Points there and got all of them combined into one Account/Contract #. We have had no problems Booking into the Hawaiian Collection since then. Cabo Azul Maintenance Fees are a lot less.

You might want to consider dumping your HVC trust points and purchasing resale HGVC deed such as either LV (Elara or Boulevard) or Craigendarroch.

Thanks a lot. Very helpful advise on how to use the directly bought points and resale points. So, it seems it is not worthwhile to convert to Hawaiian collection but instead to Cabo Azul to minimize the maintenance fees.

Yes, I bought the points at a Diamond property. They mentioned it would all be Hilton Grand Vacation points as it was just after the Diamond acquisition. They didn’t explain the difference in collections and implications. We want to keep options open for travel - not necessarily to Hawaii or western side of US only. I’ll look for resale points on EBay also. Thanks for the suggestion.

Prior to Hilton acquiring control of DRI there was a way to wash your Dirty (Resell) DRI Points. Let's say you had 5,000 Dirty (Resell) DRI Points. If you bought 2,500 Points from DRI your 5,000 Resell Points became the same as DRI Points bought from the Developer. So long as you remembered to have that written into the Contract.

I do not know if this is still possible.

Also DRI use to have Club Select/Club Combination. Also had to be written into the purchase Contract. This allowed you to trade Reservation in a different System (for us Worldmark) for DRI Points for a small fee. You could do this for twice the number of DRI Points you owned. These possible Traded Points permanently counted towards your Status in DRI. Whether or not you did the Trade in any year. These Traded Weeks could be Booked by DRI Members that had Club Select/Club Combination written into their Contracts. These traded weeks were the origin of what became DEX.

Members of DRI from before Hilton (Legacy DRI Members) that had Club Select/Club Combination still have this ability and increased Status. However if you make a new purchase or a MAX purchase you lose all of this. One more good reason to stay out of MAX.

The origin of DEX was the unsold inventory owned by DRI and DEX was available only for deeded week owners.
When they add points members to DEX 2-3 years later, they add at the same time the deposited inventory of Club Select/combo to DEX and also make a deal with RCI to have access to some RCI inventory inside DEX.

Or, if you want to sell a TS in the marketplace, but I believe that you will need to become a member to do that.
