Never went there - but I remember the ads on the AM radio

We did go to Freedom Land in the Bronx the summer of 1963 or 64 .
That land was later used to build Co-op City.

My sister was in a teen beauty pageant. Don't remember the year but it was in June. Perhaps 1969. The heat, humidity was insane. Will never forget the photographer was sweating beads off his head and face. Was traumatized from that sight!

My cousin won a teen beauty pageant there about that year. Actually the way I heard it, she came in second and she cried, so they made her a co-winner.

We used to live in one of the buildings they put up in its place. We still live about five blocks away.
Incredible! Forgot you are from North Jersey! As a child heading upstate along the west side I remember the view across the Hudson. I could see the roller coaster at the top of the cliff of the Palisades.

I live about 5 blocks from the site then and now. We must be neighbors!
Do you listen to Cousin Brucie Saturday nights?
We are neighbors, I sent you a PM years ago!

You could see it from the West side highway as well; we used to take the Cross Bronx to WSH to visit my aunt on West 12th street in the late 50/60s.
I always wanted to go.
We went to Rye Playland and Freedomland instead.

Rye Playland is still hanging on because it is owned by Westchester County. I understand it loses money.
Mountain Creek Waterpark f/k/a Action Park is still open
Legoland opened in Goshen this year. Not sure how much Covid is affecting them.
Six Flags Great Adventure is still open in Jackson, NJ
Don't know how the waterpark near the Casino in Kiamesha is doing.

Here is another radio commercial I heard often on the radio growing up:

We used to see the commercials for Action Park all the time as kids. We took our own kids to Mountain Creek about 20 years ago - that place is CRAZY. It's a wonder people don't get killed on those water rides.

There was at least one death and several serious injuries. Check if HBO is still showing Class Action Park .

When I was 12, I made the mistake of believing "many rides 5 and 10 cents" and spent all my money and ended up walking 3 miles home back to The Bronx over the George Washington Bridge. It was either "Flight to Mars" or the bus and my friend and I chose the ride.

I visited Playland once when I went out to see my mother in Stamford. That Derby Racer ride was pretty cool even as an adult.

This thread made me look up Pacific Ocean Park (POP) in Santa Monica. It opened in 1958 and closed in 1967. We moved to California in 1960. I remember hearing ads for POP, and it was closer than Disneyland for us, so I have no idea why we never went there. We certainly hit the big amusement parks like Disneyland and Knot's Berry Farm numerous times, and Marineland was closer than either of those. And the Griffith Park Zoo, which I hated until they revamped it because there were too many bees and they'd buzz around the concession stands and dive bomb you if you had cotton candy.
