$50 Marriott Gift Card for $40

Will these work on Maintenance Fees?

I'd guess no, that they're the same as the Gift Cards that can be purchased at marriottrewards.com., which we've already determined cannot be used for MF because they're no longer VISA cards. Here's the t&c's from following the OP's link (bolding mine) :
Terms & Conditions

Marriott TravelCards may be used within the Marriott portfolio of brands, including participating retail, spa, golf, food and beverage outlets. Card is a prepaid card, not a credit card, and is property of and issued by MI Fulfillment Services, LLC. Protect card like cash. This card does not expire. Each transaction will be debited against card balance; if transaction exceeds balance, user must pay the difference. Card is not redeemable for cash and change will not be returned except where otherwise required by applicable law. Card becomes inactive upon use of all card value. Card cannot be applied to group, special corporate/negotiated, catering, associate or other discounted/non-commissionable rates. Card cannot be used when reservation is booked by a travel agent or other third party. Card cannot be used to secure or confirm a reservation. Marriott Rewards points cannot be earned with the use of this card. Lost, stolen or damaged cards will be replaced only if previously registered. Value of replaced card will equal balance on card at the time it was reported lost, stolen or damaged. To check card balance and see complete terms and conditions, visit gifts.marriott.com or call +1.800.442.6132. Use of this card confirms acceptance of terms above.

I assume there is no way to use Marriott Visa to get 5 points per $ spent on this?

The credit card shows the description as "PP *GIFTCARDMAL" — not as a Marriott business entity. I would not expect Chase and Marriott to provide 5 Marriott Rewards points per dollar.

But there's worse news when it comes to Marriott Reward points. According to the Terms & Conditions, "Marriott Rewards points cannot be earned with the use of this card." If you use the card at a Marriott brand that normally provides 10 Marriott Rewards points per dollar spent plus a 50% Bonus for being Platinum, you won't get that either. So, along with not getting the "5 x" through the Chase Marriott Visa, you're giving up 19 points per dollar when you use the $50 gifts cards that you bought for $40 each. Considering that points, if used with some care, are worth more than one cent each, the cards can be a worse deal than simply using a Chase Marriott Visa. And the gift cards require more effort and can be lost.

For someone who does not have Marriott Rewards Platinum status or a Chase Marriott Visa and who stays at brands such as Residence Inn that only provide 10 Marriott Rewards points per dollar spent, the $50 gifts cards can still be quite advantageous.

We noticed that last month when we used the last of some gift cards at Maui Ocean Club as partial payment for charges at the end of our visit. The points were less than I had expected, and then realized the gift cards probably don't trigger the platinum points bump anymore, or any points. A presentation "closer" at Canyon Villas several years ago told us to charge everything to the villa, and then pay with the gift cards and we would get the 10 points per dollar offered when we purchased the Christmas offer gift cards, plus the 10 points for paying our Marriott bill plus the platinum +50% points. That was before they changed the gift card company. Too bad!

I'm thinking about buying them as Christmas gifts for our two kids. Both of them are getting married next year and will be using our MR Points for their honeymoons but neither are MR members. The cards will just be a way for them to apply a credit to their incidentals and the Points bonuses don't matter.

Is there a better deal out there if I'm looking for gift cards? Thanks!

I think this means that you do not get additional MR points because you use the gift card. I think you still get the 10 points per dollar for things charged to your room plus any elite bonuses. They view using the gift card the same as using cash.

I've used Marriott gift cards & travel cards many times and always receive MR points when I redeem them. I think the terms & conditions mean you won't get the MR points when you purchase using a Chase Marriott VISA.

The wording ("Marriott Rewards points cannot be earned with the use of this card.") suggests that the card is not treated like a cash or credit card payment when you use it, but more like a third-party payment (such as Priceline). The wording refers to when you use the card, not to when you purchase it.

I hope that BocaBoy and LAX Mom are correct, and that the wording doesn't really mean what it says.

I paid my Marriott hotel bill with gift cards earlier this month and got the 10 points/$ + silver bonus.

"Participating" sites, restaurants, etc. I used to know where to go to find that info - does anyone else have a link to it? No sense getting these if they are going to be a pain to use. We are only in Marriotts a certain amount of times a year, and I think these expire, don't they? I have used some in the past, but will not buy more until I "read the fine print" on the locations, etc. Thanks,

Mamianka

Yes this is correct. What you do lose with this is some on the front end and on the back end for using the Marriott Visa.

In the past Marriott would offer a promo for something like 15 points per dollar for the purchase of the cards and that added to the 15 points for being platinum at the resort or hotel you would get 30 points per dollar spent on hotel stays.

So with this I lose 15 x 200 = 3000 points but save $10 per $50 and still do get the usage points of 10 + 5 for platinum. You always get the usage points no matter how you pay.

You also lose the 5 points on the back end per dollar which you get by using the MAR Visa so that is another 1000 points lost.

Overall using the gift cards cost you 4000 points but you saved $40. Probably a wash but I hasn't seen that 15 point promo in a while so that is just speculation that is available.

Bob

I had a statement previously of just WHAT places were excluded - which restaurants at which resorts, etc. Before I buy any cards - the next time around - I will want to know if I can use there where we are going, and if/when they expire.

Thanks.

It actually does mean what it says, although it could be worded better. For example, if you use the gift card directly at a Marriott restaurant (but don't charge the meal to your room) you do not get points. If you use it to pay your Marriott bill at checkout you only get the points you would get if you used cash, but nothing extra because you used the card. The use of the gift card does not get you any points you would not otherwise get.
