Trust ol' Jim on this. He's been there. Only unlike having a broken leg in the UK, mine was heart block with pneumonia and pacemaker installation in Germany.

I would add to what Jim says and make sure your read very carefully what is or isn't included in the policy you are buying. Do not take the word of whomever is selling it to you.

We just learned that fellow Canadians who also winter here in Belize thought they had good travel insurance from a well known company but found out the hard way that they didn't have medical evacuation included. The person they spoke with when they purchased the insurance in Canada last year told them of course its included. The guy had a stroke last month, a few days after arriving down here, and coupled with the poor medical treatment available here, is now paralysed totally on 1 side and partially on the other from the shoulders down and cant speak. His wife had to arrange and pay for a medi-flight home to Ontario from Chetumal Mexico where she had taken him by taxi to try to get the drug that has to be administered within the first 4 hours to reduce the effects of a stroke. It wasn't available in Belize and we are only 12 miles from Chetumal at the MX border. The hospital there had the drug and gave it to him, but his prognosis is not good as it couldn't be obtained within the time limits.
