The Big Bear Lake Bald Eagles have laid 3 eggs this year for the first time ever. Right now they are incubating them in the snow, but since an eagles normal body temperature is over 105º, that's not a problem for them. Although there is a rim of snow surrounding the nest, the bowl of the nest is warm and dry. The eggs will hatch around Feb. 28 - Mar. 6. Although it's hard to tell the size of things on a webcam, these eagles stand 3 feet tall, their nest is the size of a queen mattress and the eggs are tennis ball size. I have been watching this webcam for years.

Click here to see them up close and personal:

You can also follow the highlights on Facebook on the page called Friends of Big Bear Valley and Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam.

The eagles nest has over a foot of snow over it. Every hour or so, the female stands up and shakes the accumulated snow off of her back. The dark spots in the middle of this picture are her wings after she just shook off the snow:

I love this kind of thing . Thanks for sharing .

The local news regularly checks in on Jackie and Shadow. I hate seeing them covered in snow.

The eagles are fine in the snow - the largest population of Bald Eagles is in Alaska, where they thrive, so they are well equipped to deal with extreme weather. The snow actually has an insulating effect, like an igloo, and although they can look wet on the outside, their feathers are waterproof and their skin stays dry. Also - their normal body Temp is over 105º.

We just saw the bald eagles at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park fka Wild Animal Park this weekend. They are truly a majestic and frankly "bad-ass" animal, and a cool national bird/symbol.

To anyone living in or visiting the San Diego area that happens to be a senior, free admission this entire month (Feb 2024) to the Safari Park. We are staying at Worldmark Balboa Park for a few days at Valentine’s and I was debating zoo or Sea World when I discovered Safari Park is free. Free is good! I also gave a heads up to the activities director here at the OFH to check to see if this is an annual freebie so she can set up an excursion next year.

I watch for eagles on our road trips. I saw so many in Wichita in December on our way to Branson. There is a wildlife refuge with a lot of bald eagles right off of the highway on the way to Branson. Very exciting for me. We saw one bald eagle this trip to/ from Orlando, and it was a sight to see, high in a tree in Missouri off of the interstate.

I watch the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam in North Ft Myers, FL. A pair of eagles, Ozzie and Harriet, began nesting at a horse farm in 2006. The live cam began in 2011. Ozzie died in 2015 and Harriet accepted a new mate M15. They mated for eight years and last season, after hatching two eaglets, Harriet (thought to be around 25 years old) just disappeared and M15 raised the two alone. This season, M15 has a new mate, F23, and though she laid two eggs, one was crushed. The other is one well fed little eaglet! I've watched year after year as this once secluded farm has been encroached upon and is now across from a shopping center and new housing developments. The tree sits near a very busy road now. But they keep coming back to it.SW Florida Eagle Cam

I have watched the Big Bear Eagles web cam for many years - this year's chicks just hatched, and here's a link:

We were up at our cabin today and had a few Bald Eagle flying down off the cliffs to the river. I think they are looking for the released Chinook Salmon that are by now spawned out. We also saw some Big Horn Sheep on the cliffs.

One thing I did notice in the California Redwood Forest is it doesn't have a strong forest smell like our forest. Same thing for the ocean.
