20 cheap eats for under $20 on the Big Island

Thanks! this is very useful.

Anita

This is not only timely, it's really good info. We'll be there next month. Thanks for this!

My Personal Experience/Opinion

#2 Island Lava Java (Kailua Kona) used to be our favorite breakfast spot, especially our first full day in town, but no more. They have changed their menu and not to our preference.

#3 Huggo's on the Rocks - love them but at $20pp I don't know if that's doable for a full meal.

Most of the others I'm not familiar with.

I cannot believe Big Island Grill (also Kailua Kona) is not on their list. For us, the best dining value in Hawaii, period!

Huggo's on the Rocks, not Huggo's was the one on the list. I kind of questioned a few of them, but didn't look to see if there were menu suggestions made to keep the prices down.

We went to Lava Java every morning for coffee, and one morning for breakfast, when we were there summer 2009. Enjoyed it very much.

The ones we've eaten at (and enjoyed) from that list:

Cafe Pesto
Merriman's Market Cafe
Kona Brewing Company
Quinn's Almost by the Sea
King's Grill (for breakfast)
Bamboo Restaurant & Bar
Kohala Coffee Mill & Tropical Dreams

Luanne, thanks I did correct my comment when I reread and realized they were talking about Huggo's on the Rocks, not the main restaurant especially since the G/C are for Huggo's and not "on the rocks".

I am glad you appreciate the link. As with all articles like this YMMV.

I wish I could remember the name of the hole in the wall mixed plate place we went to a couple of times. It was between Snorkel Bob's (it was the guy there who recommended it) and the Home Depot in an industrial/commercial area.

It was very good plate lunch and very reasonable.

These kind of articles get me dreaming of going back to the Big Island. :)

Kona Brewing Company's daily special is a great deal! - You get a large slice of pizza, and a nice salad, and one of their micro-brews for about $7. And if you do one of their free brewery tours, you get a free tasting.

Greatest Burger

Try Splashers on Alii Drive, greatest burgers on the island. If you are not real hungry share.

How long ago was this? There used to be a Sam Choy's up in that area that sounds like what you're describing. However, it's been gone for awhile.

It was a couple of years ago, and no, it wasn't a Sam Choy's it was just a little Mom & Pop kind of place, but very good.

BTW, we saw Sam Choy on that trip when we went to a Hula/Music fest at the Sheraton Keauhou.

We found an incredible chocolate store up in the industrial complex on our last trip. Kailua Candy Company, here is the location:

Kamanu St and Kauholo St
Between Home Depot & Costco in the Koloko Industrial Area
Kailua Kona, HI 96745

Did you hear that Sam Choy is going to open a restaurant where the Wendy's used to be in the Keahou Shopping Center? It's been in the works for quite awhile.

So is Lava Java still baking fresh pastries, like their cinnamon buns in the morning?
