On Tuesday we had to make the heartbreaking decision to have our 16 year old diabetic dog to sleep. He was blind and deaf and has been diabetic for the past 3.5 years. He became ill on Saturday, stopped eating Sunday and became very life less. Being diabetic and not eating doesn't work since you can't give insulin. We did take him to emergency on Sunday to have them look at him. The doctor did a preliminary exam and wanted to admit him to the hospital for more testing (estimated cost $3,000) My husband asked if our Petey was dying and the vet answered "We are all dying" Not the flippant answer I wanted to hear. We asked if he could give Petey fluids and we would take him home and see our vet the next day.
Went to see our vet and he felt our pup might have had a stroke and based on his age we would do testing - ultra sound, mri, extensive blood work or do nothing. We decided to take him home to see if we would have a miracle and he would eat again. We discussed it when we were home and made the decision that if he did not eat by the next day we would end his suffering. Now for the 1st time in 45 years we do not have a dog in our house. We are sad but know we made the right decision for Petey.
