We don't have much trouble with squirrels at our feeder as DH strung a wire from the clothes line pole to a tree (about 15-18 feet, about 8 feet off the ground) the feeder hangs in the middle. Our friends heard a commotion outside last evening and when they looked out saw this huge black bear feasting on the bird seed in the squirrel proof bird feeder that used to hang in the tree. This is a small subdivision in a rural area and less than 1 mile from our house.

Be careful trying to outsmart squirrels -- they are adaptable.

See what this guy did in his spare "Shelter in Place" time when he noticed squirrels getting into his bird feeder.

I used this type of feeder and the squirrels were never able to eat the seeds.
I could adjust the feeder according to the weight of the birds that visited the feeder. If anything heavier tried to sit on that circle, the weight on the circle closed the feeding ports. This worked every time.
