Sorry for the spoiler but, how does anyone place "The Simpsons" at number 1? :ponder:

That's a question I have when I read of the Top 100, 30, 10, etc. of all time. Top 100/30/10 according to whom? What is the criteria for ranking?

If it was based on longest running, The Simpsons would be at or near the top and all of those one season wonders that are listed and that I never heard of wouldn't even be on the list.

The Simpsons is there because of its cultural impact over 30 (!!) years, the uniqueness of the show itself (including the hundreds of guest appearances), and the quality of the writing.

I could quibble with some of the rankings as I haven't seen a bunch of the shows but one stands out - how the hell is Night Court only #97???

British comedies were poorly served.

No Are You Being Served?

No 'Allo 'Allo. (Probably the most irreverent, politically incorrect, and belly laugh funny sitcom Britain ever produced. An 85 episode serial with 25 continuing characters all of which are important, in a 30 minute show!)

No Yes Minister/Prime Minister.

This! I love Night Court. I know it doesn't translate well into today's times, but it was silly yet had some very smart writing. It was overshadowed by NBC Thursday night giants Cosby and Cheers, but was so good in its own right.

I love Arrested Development, but the last two seasons really drags down the rankings for me. My wife and I have been watching New Girl and we both think it fun and quirky. We know people that are like each of the four main characters and it's fun comparing them to our friends.

My favorite show of all time, Seinfeld, came in at a respectable number #3.

I must live in a bubble, over half of these I have never even heard of.

Agreed. Add:
  • Red Dwarf
  • Open All Hours
  • Chef
  • Whites
  • Good Neighbors/Good Times
  • To The Manor Born
  • As Time Goes By
  • W1A
  • Top Gear (with Clarkson & Co.) - I know, it's not a sitcom, but what the hell.

I agree with 'Allo 'Allo and Are You Being Served. So sad when we finished 'Allo.

You're not the only one! I'm not much of a sitcom fan, especially after the early 1990s.

Soap would be way higher on my list. :)
Me too. And I'm at the lower end of the age group that watched it live. Bert and the aliens!

I guess they just dropped the mic on British shows with Faulty Towers. I watched that on PBS as a rerun in high school.

It begins - and ends - with I Love Lucy!
The gold standard for situation comedies.

You have to wonder who was doing the rating....I was surprised at the number of animated shows on the list. It is similar to when I look at TripAdvisor and sort based on the ranking of the restaurants in an area and a coffeeshop comes up at number one... who is doing the ranking.

Here are a few I didn't notice on the list;
Diff'rent Strokes
Alf
Two and a Half Men
Happy Days??? <<- WTH
Married with Children
