My favorite "ugly" Christmas sweater was worn by one of DW's uncles to the annual family Christmas reunion on her mother's side of the family - this was mid-1970s.
The sweater was white with red sleeves, and on the front was a large Rudolph, made of sewn-on sequins. It was stunning.

“Ugly” Christmas Sweaters Used to Have Character. They’ve Become Something Else Entirely.
Most modern interpretations are a sad imitation of what was once a kitschy holiday tradition.
