There seems to be some discrepancy between when he was last seen aboard (11pm) and when his sister reported him missing (noon next day) and when the Coast Guard picked him up from a merchant ship, (8:30pm) Whatever happened, this was one VERY lucky guy!

I sailed on that ship out of New Orleans. I'd have jumped overboard, too.

That was one blessed cruise passenger to survive in that cold water at night. IMO.

My one and only Carnival cruise, and it was only booked because it was the only game in town. After being aboard that ship, I won't be back. Can anybody say "Disco-Dancing Patriotic Eagles?" Yeah, that.

Carnival cruise line is a party ship. We liked to relax, and enjoy fine dining with Celebrity Cruise Line.

17 hours in that cold water. He is listed as in stable condition in the hospital.

I’ve read that the higher your blood alcohol level, the better your survival in cold water. I have a feeling that was in play here.

I suspect you're right. For all the apparent "openings" on a cruise ship that size, you have to work at going overboard. I can only imagine what the man had to say for himself. And why didn't the sister notice him missing sooner than she did?

The other side of the coin--- the higher one's alcohol level the more likely for one to go over the rail.

Why does one drink to get drunk on a moving cruise ship.
His sister probably was this individual drinking partner. That is probably the reason, she did not know, he was missing until the next day.

You are probably correct about the higher your blood alcohol level content in this individual body kept him alive. The high content of alcohol kept his body from going into cardiac shock and his blood level from dropping.IMHO.

It has been reported that this individual was in the water for 17 hours, therefore IMO, he had some survival skills training...IMHO

Maybe not.

He is just one lucky individual to be spotted by another ship in that water

and to be picked up by the Coast Guard and transport to a near hospital.

Carnival cruise ship passenger who spent 15 hours overboard in the Gulf of Mexico was 30 seconds from death says Coast Guard rescuer as he reveals new details of the miracle at sea: 'He had nothing left to give'
  • James Grimes, 28, was rescued by the US Coast Guard in the Gulf of Mexico on Thanksgiving Day after falling overboard from a Carnival cruise ship
  • He was found at about 8.30pm and was showing signs of hypothermia, shock, and dehydration after 15 hours at sea
  • Coast Guard says Grimes was found responsive and 'seconds from death' before he was taken to New Orleans for treatment
  • He was last seen in the ship's bar with his sister before he left to use the restroom around 11pm on Wednesday and did not return

Probably the same reason people get drunk at a stationary bar or their kitchen.
