We were contacted by a company called Timeshare Contract Resolution to get a lawyer involved in getting out of our HGV timeshare. Is it legit?

No, these are pretty much always scams. Look at the TUG help and advice articles - there's 3 ways out:
1) Give away or in limited cases sell for a small amount the TS to someone else
2) Deed back the TS if the system or HOA will take it
3) Default on the MFs and let them eventually forclose.

All scams.

Basically they will take thousands of dollars from you then tell you to stop paying MF, and responding to the company. Hopefully the timeshare will foreclose on you and you will be "out of your timeshare" with all the attending consequences. So you are paying thousands for a service you could do yourself for free.

No one, including a lawyer (but doubtful they have one) can just get you out of a contract/purchase scot free. That is why it is a contract/property purchase.

Just to clarify, they usually won't outright tell you to stop paying. They do it in a round about way. They will say to forward all communication to them and they will take care of it. When you do this, you ultimately stop paying because you should also be forwarding your maintenance fee bills to them to. They do nothing with the communications you send to them and in the end you default and the HOA forecloses. Just want to point out that detail because they really won't come out and flat out say stop paying. They may even tell you during your "consultation" that they won't tell you to stop paying.

That is possible but I've never done it so don't know directly. However, many get MF bills electronically or just know they were due, so I suspect that in many cases they must tell people not to pay.

Some HGVC deeds you can actually sell depending on what you own. HVC (formerly DRI) trust points are worthless but someone might take the collection for free. If you own HVC deeded property, this usually can easily be given away free. All of this to say, have you determined what you own and have you considered giving it away free? If you tell us what specifically you own, we can advise.
