Can I go back to Mexico after not paying vacation club fees?

So long story short in 2019 my hubby and I went to Mexico got hooked into a vacation club, realized too late it was a bad choice for us. We got advice to stop paying the maintenance fees and other fees a few months in and so we took the loss and stopped paying and canceled our card. My husband wants to go back to mexico in the future but I'm not sure it's safe to do that, won't they see our names and send us to jail because we stopped paying fees? Or am I being crazy?

It won't be an issue. If you, or your husband, are thinking about that big news story not long ago where the American couple was arrested, then that is a very different situation. Your situation wouldn't be anywhere close to what those people were doing.

Vacation club is like a gym membership club. No one goes to jail for stopping payment.
The story that made the news was much more than stopping payment. There were accusations of fraud: charge back for services rendered.

I don't think it matters. Walking away from a Mexican timeshare debt is a civil matter and isn't a jail-able crime. A person couldn't use the membership they defaulted on but likely could use an exchange company or just rent to stay.

Not necessarily jail-able. But who knows if the resort will cancel the reservation just out of spite. Just a thought.

I kind of doubt that an exchange accepted by the resort can be canceled by the resort without cause. Maybe spite is a cause ? idk, lol.

Wow thanks everyone!! I was really worried because of that article recently about that couple so thanks for addressing that too. I definitely won't be returning to resort where we got the membership so thats no worries. Thanks again know my husband will be really happy to know this.
