[ 2023 ] Dishwasher issue

The GE repairman said fridge should last 25 years. When that goes, I am going to remodel that part of the kitchen because we will also replace the oven and microwave. The cabinet won't fit any built in microwaves offered today so we have kept ours running even though it has issues until we can replace that entire wall of cabinets. That will be an expensive day. Maybe I will look on FB for used ones.

We're in the process of building more houses at the farm, so either FB will provide; or I'll get the Sub-Zero commercial units that I prefer. Anything which can be recharged with refrigerant is a better solution. More expensive at the front end, sure. But not bound for a landfill in five years like anything made by Lucky Goldstar.

UPDATE: Now Deceased

Well our GE dishwasher finally kicked the bucket yesterday. Only worked well for 3 years and the last 2 years it had constant intermittent power issues. As I mentioned we had to keep turning the breaker off and then on again to get it to work. Yesterday that was the end of that. We kept it going as long as we could. So ridiculous that an appliance like this breaks after 3 years! It should have lasted until we were close to nursing home age! I thought about not even buying one again but it would bother me to have a non working appliance in our kitchen so....

And we only use it maybe 3 times per week at most. Just the two of us so we stack it for a few days and run it when it's full. Of course, it was full this morning so I had to take everything out and hand wash them.

I wanted to buy a basic Bosch, which is what we bought for our remodeled kitchen in our other home, but the prices are now outrageous! For a simple thing like a dishwasher!
So went to Lowes and, since now staying away from GE (all the appliances in our house are GE), it came down to a Whirlpool or a Midea for decent prices and the Midea won out. Sale $499. It is rated a good buy by Consumer Reports and it has a 2 year warranty and priced competitively with the Whirlpool- actually $30 or so cheaper than similar models. Plus we bought a Midea dehumidifier last year and are very happy with it.

Then we applied for a Lowes Credit Card and got 5% off for charging it on there ($25) and then we had a coupon for another 20% so got $100 more off.

But of course here's the kicker- so $50 for Haul Out of the other dishwasher and almost $300 for install of the new one plus $36 for extra parts needed for the install.
So no matter what- total was over $700. SMH.......Imagine if we bought a more expensive dishwasher. You'd be paying like $2000 total for a stupid thing like a dishwasher!

Now have to wait for the appointment for the install. First world problems I know......just bothers me how unreliable things are made these days. Our first dishwasher (GE Hot Point) in our former home lasted over 25 years- actually never broke, but we replaced it when we remodeled our kitchen. First ten years of our lives in our first home- a handyman special - we remodeled the kitchen, but never put in a dishwasher. I remember when we tried to sell that house some potential buyers complained we didn't have one. LOL!
😅

Our city's solid waste service includes appliance haul-away.
I forgot and paid Lowe's $50 fee to haul off a stove.
But the delivery guy helped me call and get a refund.
I told Lowe's that I had no longer had the old stove.

@WinniWoman We replaced our dishwasher with a Bosch and bought it through Costco, which includes free installation and haul away of the old appliance. All installation parts were also included in the price and we paid about $1K for it.
Nice!

Unfortunately the only Costco is far from here though and we don’t have a membership either. I also really wanted to stay away from that $1000 figure. Here, most Bosch dishwashers were anywhere from $1200 to $2000 plus the extra $ for everything else. Home Depot, Lowe’s, Appliance stores, etc.

I really wanted to look at the dishwashers before purchasing, though my last kitchen remodel in our former home I ordered all our appliances on line through Sears, including a basic Bosch dishwasher ($500 at the time) .

I can’t wrap my head around paying so much money for a dishwasher.

My neighbor has had a Midea that came with her house (builder) for many years now - though not 10 years yet- and it’s still going so that’s a good sign at least.

I don’t believe we have that here. We are in a private HOA community that pays for our trash pickup. Not the city.

We have a dump, but we’d have to haul it there ourselves and not only that we’d have to pay a $5 day pass and also $15 to dispose of it, not to mention we don’t own a truck. And I’m not sure we could even lift it anyway, though we could get help with that. Just not worth it. Nothing’s easy.🤷

Wait until my husband tries to get rid of like 3 or 4 laptops he’s no longer using now that he finally bought a new one. More $ to dispose.

We had nothing but bad luck with GE dishwashers. I replaced one with a Bosch 800 thinking it would be fabulous but it doesn't clean all that well. In a different house, I sprung for the cool Miele and it is indeed fabulous. Who knew a fancy dishwasher could make me so happy!

Yes. I’ve read those are top of the line and very expensive.

IDK, I spent ~ $2600 for a Bosch Benchmark replacement for our 10ish year old Bosch 800 that was leaking. Our hard water kills pretty much all water appliances so I don't really hold this against Bosch. That said I also always always get the 5 year extended warranty from whoever I buy from because I know there's a very good chance there'll be a pump replacement near year 5 from our water. That said, I also keep the mechanical breakdown insurance on our homeowners policy because I know things are going to futz out on me, so I only had to cover $500 of the replacement, the deductible basically.

I will say, I had a $500 special dishwasher back in 2000 that came with the house (all low end stuff). It didn't break down any, but it cleaned badly and was super loud to run. I have basically decided there's no point in me paying for the "cheap" options that don't work well - why buy something that doesn't work to begin with lol.

I also priced out Lowes and decided to buy from Best Buy because they sold the same dishwashers but the services and warranty were cheaper and they had stuff available about 2 weeks faster. Lowes always seems to come up with a way to price me out of buying from them, IDK.

This is pretty astonishing to me - I think you're the first person I've ever talked to who wasn't blown away by how well Bosch's clean. Of course, loading it correctly and using the correct sorts of soap makes a difference, as does the cycle. The full manual (probably a PDF online) will show the potentially non-intuitive loading method. I also found that if you use the fast cycle you'll probably have to re-wash a couple things the next cycle, but at a benefit of being able to run more loads in a day. But optimum cleaning took the longer cycles. Finish ultra pellets work better than Cascade, but also cost more.

Our first ever dishwasher - Hot Point - we had well water - and it lasted 25 years and was still working when we remodeled our kitchen and got the Bosch.

We never buy extended warranties.

I always use the fast cycle. Let the dishes air dry. Use the least expensive detergent pods or powder I can get- usually at BJ’s. If something isn’t perfectly clean I just clean it.

I think some people make too big of a deal about washing dishes. But that’s just me.

If we put silverware on the top shelf instead of the bucket, the food doesn't come off. It's not a bad dishwasher otherwise. I'm just kinda in love with the Miele now. ;)

I did seriously look into Miele too - they just seemed to cost even more (they had like $4,000 models) and their 3rd rack seemed much less tall than the Bosch V shaped ones, so much less would fit up there. Of course, for us it cleans stuff great up there (all our silverware except large serving spoons or filppers don't fit well). If it didn't I can see not really caring if anything fits on the Miele.

Bring them to Staples, (Customer Service desk), we've done that with quite a few ~ they'll recycle them ~ doesn't cost a thing. Their website has a whole list of things they'll recycle for free. I think Office Depot does too, but I've never tried.

Really? I’ll have to check into that. Thanks!

The Bosch dishwasher that we bought ($1K) has an opening below for salt tablets/pallets to resolve hard water issue. We have softened water for the house and don't need to add salt pallets.

I do find that the Bosch dishwasher leaves marks on the dishes compared to the previous one that we replaced, an Asko dishwasher that was still working after 24 years. We replaced it with Bosch because we broke a hinge of something and decided that it was time. We wanted to replace with another Asko and in our research, we found out that China has bought the company and we passed on that.

We opted for a KitchenAid for our new home. Also got the duel fuel range (gas cooktop, electric/convection oven and extra baking drawer). Happy with the washing capabilities. I always use express wash. Always use finish tablets with the red ball, always use the rinse aid too. The third tray items come clean 90% of the time. Cascade tablets just don’t do the job….at our previous house either. I was having issues with plastic storage containers used for leftover red sauce and the orange stain. Son-in-law taught me a trick he saw somewhere. Put some hot water in the container with a piece of paper towel and squirt some Dawn dish detergent in (it must be Dawn or the Costco version of Dawn). Put the lid on and shake vigorously. Empty out and rinse. Orange stain and grease all gone. I then put in dishwasher (after rinsing Dawn out thoroughly).
We walked out of Home Depot after getting a big run around and then told we could not use the 10% off in addition to the manufacturers rebate when we had to replace our stackable LG washer/dryer (it survived the move and being stored in a POD for 18 months but conked out 18 months later…just the washer but replaced both. Ordered online at Costco, free delivery, free set up and free take away. HD was going to charge.
@WinniWoman enjoy your new purchase.

As for the tomato stains on plastic, I simply use glass containers for anything with tomato sauce.

Another thing you can to is just line a plastic container with plastic wrap and then put the food in it.

In any event I don’t put any plastic containers or even pots in the dishwasher. Just dishes, glasses and utensils. And yes I just use the fast cycle also. I like that with this new dishwasher the door will automatically pop open when it is done to allow the dishes to air dry.

Looking forward to getting it. I hope it will be next week. Waiting for the installers call.

Do wish we had a Costco nearby but it’s over an hour and a half away which is why we don’t belong to it. We did join a few years ago so my husband could get hearing aids but then afterwards we didn’t renew. I would have joined again and just ordered on line, but the website doesn’t allow you to see prices unless your a member which is bs if you ask me.

😅

If you buy at Costco, haul away and install is included in the price. I also had a ton of power issues with my GE dishwasher at former home. We had it for a couple of years and it would lose power all the time. I looked online found that most people had replace a specific part. I bought the part for $20 from Amazon and replace it myself. Worked fine afterwards, but wouldn't but GE dishwasher again. We are redoing our entire first floor next month and bought a BOSCH 800 dishwasher, but Fridge and Stove are GE Cafe.

Yeah I researched this issue but could not find the exact solution. We think it was the control board/ motherboard, but who knows? We figured even if it’s that and we had a repair person come out it wouldn’t really be worth it at this point. Maybe we’re wrong.🤷

Plus as I mentioned in previous posts we do not have a Costco nearby and so we are not members. To see the on line prices on Costco you need to be a member which is ridiculous.

It's so funny because now when I go into my cabinets they are always stocked. Before, because we stacked the dishwasher for a few days, we would run out of some things- maybe some utensils or bowls or whatever. Now everything is always washed and put away and ready to go again!

I checked the status of our order and it says the dishwasher won't be ready to be picked up until next Wednesday! Yet somehow if I had it delivered it would arrive tomorrow!

Anyway, the installer picks it up, and is supposed to call within 2 business days after that to set up the appt., so it looks like we probably won't be getting this thing for another two weeks! (I have an important doctors appt next Thursday so that day is out). I remember the days you went into the store, paid for the item and it was brought to you and installed that same week.

So far I am already getting used to not having a dishwasher.....
