We're planning a trip in October. Went online and was surprised my online account is still active after 10+ years.

I'm confused. Do I need to buy a ticket before I make a reservation? If yes, what happens if there are not enough open spots
for the days we want to go?

Any notes are appreciated.

Yes and no. You will buy ticket(s), then put in a reservation. But, Disney parks don't do reservations past 60 days. The first part of October is open, so you should be good if your travel dates are in the next 60 days! It may get a little cramped towards Halloween and Christmas.
