We had a split stay booked at two of our home resorts for the first week of March 2026: BCV and Copper Creek. However in light of getting an II exchange into Boulder Ridge for Jan, we decided to see if we could switch resorts at opening of the 7 month window, which was today, first choice Poly. And we got it! 3 nights in a resort view studio. We requested Tokelau building.

So now I need all the Poly tips: Trader Sam’s, Ohana, other food/drink, water pageant and fireworks viewing, transportation advice, and other resort tips.

:)

You can walk from your resort to the Magic Kingdom.

You can eat all the Dole Whip you want at The Pineapple Lanai takeout window. :)

I haven't stayed at Poly, but I'm sure it will be wonderful.

Yes. But the outside bar has the same drinks, no/short line, and arguably better atmosphere (al fresco and live music vs cool bartenders and audio animatronics).

No if you’re ever been to a luau in Hawaii.

water pageant and fireworks viewing
Go to the water.

transportation advice
Walk to the TTC for EPCOT and sometimes MK.

Trader Sam’s at Disneyland was better outdoors if they had live music too. Without live music it was meh.

Yes I’ve been to luaus in Hawaii but I would have never thought to compare them to Ohana. Which we’ve also been to- but back in the day- when, as I understand it, it was better. But for old times sake and for future reference, we’ll still try to get a reservation. I’m not sure how successful we’ll be in an only-3-day stay and I won’t be crushed if we don’t get it. But I’ll be happy if we do.

Agreed. And I heartily recommend hopping on the monorail to eat and drink at the Enchanted Rose Lounge at the Grand Floridian.

Fireworks viewing…get close to the lake and wear bug spray. It is a very nice view, but don’t remember if it gets busy there.
If I recall correctly, you can park pretty close to the original DVC section. We only stayed there once soon after opening for one night and it was convenient….except we had to go to the lobby in the main building a couple of times as our Magic bands would not open the door.

I would not recommend walking to MK…..it is a long walk to the GV from MK, even further to Poly. If you are exiting the park during a busy time, the resort monorail can be okay…you stop at BLT, then TTC….you would probably be better off disembarking at the TTC as there is (used to be) a path to the Poly from there. Also I read somewhere that they were going to start using larger boats from MK to Poly….right now they use those really small boats that don’t fit many people. I think that with the new Poly tower they really do need bigger boats.

Have not been to Ohana in many years. It used to be a must do…but we really don’t do much restaurant eating any more since they did away with Tables in Wonderland and the deluxe dining plan. We did Disney for our Honeymoon in 1979 and stayed at Polynesian Resort ( the only other choice was Contemporary Resort). Ohana was called something else then…Papeete Veranda. They used to have a character breakfast buffet, have some great photos and memories when we brought the kids there 10 years later.

Your first full day at Poly I would get to the MK as early as possible for early entry. Resort monorail ( as I’m pretty sure they don’t run the express monorail early as most people parking at TTC are not staying at Disney resorts). Or Poly boat (not the Ferry) if it goes directly to MK and doesn’t stop at GF….and if it runs that early. You could probably do that on check out day too depending on how early MK early opening is. I love Tron and would totally do that 2 days in a row.

No matter where I stay I will take one morning and drive really early to Animal Kingdom for early opening….they sometimes open earlier than early. Usually without DH. I make a beeline for Avatar, then over to the Safari, then expedition Everest (single rider line if regular wait time is long). Then take my time wandering around. Very sad they are closing Tough to be a bug.

Beach Club visit is easy…walk to Epcot, Skyliner to Riviera for good food, skyliner or boat to Hollywood. March might be Flower & Garden at Epcot.

Seems like you are making good use of your recent DVC add ons. Now that DH is on the road to recovery we can resume our 3 times a year visits. It’s nice to be able to drive there now instead of flying,

No way! Our only trip to WDW when I was a child was in 1979. We also stayed at the Polynesian. We had Thanksgiving dinner at the Papeete Veranda. All I remember is that I had macadamia nut pie for dessert. The trip was a once in a lifetime thing at the time. Mostly we visited relatives for vacations when I was a kid. I haven’t stayed at the Polynesian since.

Totally!

Our plan is to do a Year of Disney with annual passes every 3ish years. So April 2025-April 2026 will be Disney heavy. Our next Year of Disney will be Dec 2027-Dec 2028. But this year we are going 5 times (was supposed to be six but we had to cancel a 2 week trip in May) and doing a little recon for future trips. Our trip number is boosted by using up the last of our Hyatt II deposits on DVC exchanges.

April we stayed at BLT/Boulder Ridge- 5 nights
Sept we are staying at OKW/BCV- 6 nights
Dec we are staying at Kidani/Jambo- 6 nights
Jan we are staying at Boulder Ridge- 7 nights
March we are staying at BCV/Poly- 7 nights

Maybe in our next year of Disney we will need to try for a GFV and Riveria split stay. But mostly I feel like Disney transport wastes a lot of time, so I need to love the resort (Wilderness Lodge, I’m looking at you) to deal with less convenient transportation. So it’s hard to imagine using BCV points to book anything other than BCV.

Our current school of thought is to pick an area to stay and focus our trip on that area: while at Wilderness Lodge focus on MK, WL and Fort dining and rec, maybe nip over to Steakhouse 71. While at AKL focus on AK park and AKL dining and resort activities, with maybe evening visits to other parks if park hours are long enough. Rather than try to visit all parks on each trip, visit all parks over the course of each year. So right now the thought is that some trips will be split stays at MK area resorts/EPCOT area resorts and others will be AKL. Occasional stays or nights at Saratoga or OKW when we can’t get anything else. We’ll see if that pattern suits us over time, but it’s my current thought.

I enjoy Ohana but it’s much easier and cheaper to sit at Tambu Lounge for the potstickers, wings and noodles. If you are there at opening (4 or 5?) then a table is easy to get. You can get the banana bread pudding as takeout on mobile order from Kona Cafe. Ours was packaged in a box and then Saran wrapped so there was no leaking.

Last visit we ate at Wailulu Bar at the new island tower. We just walked up to the bar and immediately had a table on the patio. We then sat on the lawn in front of the tower for the fireworks. It was a great spot and I’d definitely do it again. Lakeside at the Polynesian (instead of the Tower) may be less crowded overall though. We did this right after Island Tower opened so it may be more crowded now than it was in December.

The quiet pool is one of the best relaxing spots at the resort and typically not crowded. If you have a refillable mug there is a station at the quiet pool. At quick service my favorite is the nachos. Not fancy but fun.

I also second the Enchanted Rose. My dad says they have his favorite martini there.

As a Disney World Cast Member, the walkway between TTC and Polynesian (tower and villas) is currently open. As others have mentioned, in addition to walking to TTC, you have a boat and monorail. If the monorail goes down (it has a few times over the last few weeks due to severe thunderstorms), buses will take guests to their resorts and EPCOT.

wow….I just felt so old…you were a child in 1979 when I was on my honeymoon!!!

I love your plans…but I suspect they will change. And you may find yourself needing a few more points. I hope they keep the $99 thing…I have a few small contracts that could use a few points. You only live once. And I’m happy at WDW.

I was 13 because it took my parents that long to save up. So not a small child, potentially only 5-10 years younger than you.

What is the $99 thing?

I was 23 in 1979.

The $99 thing is the membership extra Magic or something like that. It costs $99 and it gets you into the DVC lounges without waiting if there is a wait list and also entitles you to the later hours at figment lounge…not sure if there are later hours at the new MK one. I was able to renew my sorcerers pass for 65 points that I was going to lose due to our May trip cancellation (had already been banked and could not rebank). You can buy the one-time use points …..I think it is 24 for the price of 12. I have one pretty bare contract…I think the rules are you can only buy them to complete a reservation but that may have changed. You can cancel the reservation and the points remain….you just can’t transfer or bank them…but don’t take my word for it. You also get 30 days of photo pass. The offer was Jan 2025 thru December 2025….so even if you purchased it today, it expires in December. I definitely got my moneys worth…I hope they offer it again for 2026….may be planning a big family trip and it would be great for the lounges and buying more extra points.

Oh yeah. I have that Membership Magic thing to get the gifted OTU points.

Which brings up a great question: on which trip should we use the Photopass thing?
1. Sept BCV. We’ll have the Halloween Party and it might be cool to get some photos during that.
2. Dec AKL. Are Christmas pics better than Halloween pics?

Maybe we will try to do a photo safari on one of the trips- try to get photos at all the best pic locations

I thought I remember you saying you had the Magic membership thing. A question I asked when I purchased it….is the photo pass for 30 consecutive days or can you spread it out amongst your trips? I don’t know too many people that spend 30 consecutive days at Disney…except people from outside the US, but they are not allowed to purchase member Magic if I recall correctly. I need to call today anyway so I’ll ask again.

Update: I just found the rule buried in fine print. 30 days from when memory maker is activated. Which brings me to another question….if DH also purchases the member extra for $99, can he also get memory maker for 30 days and purchase more one time use points for a different contract? Not really worth it for us as we only have one trip between now and December. But something to think about for next year and big family trip.
