The Criminal Enterprise Run by Monkeys

A cabal of furry thieves snatch iPhones and other valuables from visitors to a temple in Bali—and trade them for mangos

PECATU, Indonesia—At a cliff-side temple on the tropical island of Bali, an unexpected group of criminals is running one of the world’s most sophisticated scam operations.
Every week, they steal dozens of phones, wallets and other valuables from tourists in broad daylight and exchange them for handsome rewards. It’s been going on for decades and nobody’s been able to stop it.
The culprits? Long-tailed macaques.

Monkeys are a menace. Many tourist think it's fine to interact with monkeys but monkeys are a carrier or rabies and if a monkey scratches you, you need to get a rabies vaccine. My grandson in law was scratched by a monkey in Central America this last spring. When he came home he had to get the rabies vaccine.

In the Dickens novel Oliver Twist, a man named "Fagin" has a stable of young boys who pickpocket for him. I think a great business idea is to train a stable of moneys to do the same thing and just have to hand them mangoes upon their successfully presenting their treasures.

But would I like Indonesia? :)

IDK about rabies, but Herpes Simplex B is carried by macaques and while infection is rare, it is scary stuff:
B virus infection of humans is extremely rare. People typically get infected with B virus if they are bitten or scratched by an infected macaque monkey, or have contact with the monkey's eyes, nose, or mouth. Only one case has been documented of an infected person spreading B virus to another person. Traveling to an area where macaques are known carriers of the virus and interacting in close contact in areas such as temples poses a risk of exposure. However, even in endemic areas, human cases are rare. There have been no known cases of B virus in travelers.
When humans are zoonotically infected with B virus, they can develop encephalitis, resulting in permanent neurological dysfunction or death. The severity of the disease increases for untreated patients. As of 2014, there was a case fatality rate of approximately 80%.

IDK about rabies

The risk of Central American monkey rabies is low, however, just like in the USA, when an animal with a low probability of rabies, draws blood by bite or scratch, there is a possibility of rabies. Since there is no cure for rabies once symptomatic, it is standard procedure to get the rabies vaccine if you are bit or scratched by an animal that hasn't been vaccinated.

That B virus sounds like some nasty stuff. Rabies is similar in that your brain swells up and you die. The medical term is meningoencephalitis.

Well with kids, I'm thinking the advantage is they are potty trained. :)

Rabies is an absolutely horrific way to die with a mortality rate of nearly 100 percent. You absolutely do not want to mess around and should get a vaccine if there’s even the most remote of possibilities that you’ve been exposed.
