I looked through the threads, but didn't see one, so posting here.

I'm staying 7/12-7/19 at The Quin with my 21yo son. We got 2 rooms, Studio+ for him and then a Studio+ for me for 2 days and then I move to a Studio PH for 7/14-7/19 at The Penthouses. Should be fun and hopefully good weather! For clarity, I work remote and my son is doing remote summer school (he should graduate in December, but that is a different thread where we unlock college expense reduction!), so we plan to work during the day and then go explore mornings and evenings and whatever.

I have not been to NYC in many years. son - never been.

Some questions:
  • I recall reading somewhere to maybe call before arriving and ask for particular rooms. Is this a thing? Is there a particular Studio PH I should ask for?
  • Dining options:
    • Coffee shops?
    • Lunch / Dinner recs?
    • Pub / wine bars?
    • note: we might do "nice" one time, but generally we like the more everyday type of places
  • Entertainment:
    • Broadway tickets?
    • Live music (my son is a musician, so this is particularly interesting to us - love jazz, indie, "yacht rock", really whatever as long as musicians are actually playing)
  • Other suggestions?
    • Open to ideas, I'm not sure what I don't know so please make suggestions
TIA for ideas.

For music, I suggest looking at Pollstar.com to see what is happening in NYC during your dates. Also, for Jazz there;s always Birdland. Also, see what's happening at Carnegie Hall. The commute is good :)

Wine bar - the rooftop bar adjacent to the Thompson almost next door is a lot of fun.

Museums - The Met, AMNH.

Broadway - try the TKTS booth at Times Square and see what they have on offer for discount. We've never been disappointed. Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway can all be good.

Wandering/running Central Park is always great, Walking the Brooklyn Bridge and taking the NYC Ferry back to South Street.

For one-time things, 1 WTC is a great experience.

Cheers.

I like the Met, History Museum, Ellis Island, Transit Museum, Museum of the City of New York, Whitney, NY Library Tour, Botanical Gardens. Dining I like Jacks Wife Freda, St Anselm, Aria Wine Bar, Briccolo Pizza.

The subway access is excellent as the 57th st station is only steps away.

Can't believe I forgot the NY Botanical Garden (the one in the Bronx). We're even members there :)

Definitely a nice and non-touristy thing to do.

Cheers.
Metro North has a stop there. Very easy to get to.

My most recent trip to NYC included:

(1) Ride on Staten Island Ferry

(2) Walk on High Line --

The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Saved from demolition by neighborhood residents and the City of New York, the High Line opened in 2009 as a hybrid public space where visitors experience nature, art, and design.

My favorite place in NYC is the garden at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, which is part of the Smithsonian. It's in Carnegie's former mansion on the upper east side. There's a small cafe where you can purchase light fare--salads, sandwhiches, etc.--and then eat in the garden. They are in the midst of their design triennial exhibition, and it's always fantastic, with an included audio guide.

The best deal in NYC is to take the public ferry out to Rockaway Beach from lower Manhattan at sunset. The view of the sunset and of the Statue of Liberty can't be beat for the $3 it will cost you. You can sit on the open, upper deck, and if you want, you can eat dinner out there at some places close to the ferry terminal. We found this more enjoyable than the Staten Island ferry, and it's cheaper, too! :)

I would also second the High Line.

There are no options for which studio PH you get; they all have individual codes and you will get the one you booked. There’s a post in the resort info sticky that should help in figuring out which you’re getting.

thanks for the sticky pointer.

And thanks everyone for the input so far! I think I have several weeks worth of go-see-do gathered already for our 7 day stay!

There are many trendy shops/eats and Whitney Museum in Meat packing district to start...

Walk on High line.

Finish at Hudson Yard. Area is new.
Very much so. I would add that while you're down there, you should visit Little Island (more or less across the street from the Whitney).

Nice recommendation, but isn’t the Staten Island ferry free?

I second (or third?) the High Line and also the Little Island, as mentioned. We did engineering tours of both as part of Open House New York last October and these gave very interesting insights into both structures. Even without those tours, though, there is so much to enjoy. While on the High Line, stop off for Chelsea Market. Also, I do have to say that the Starbucks Reserve in the same area is pretty cool, no matter what one may think of Starbucks (and we're not huge fans). The setup is fabulous including the coffee roasting line and the full bar upstairs.

Cheers.

for jazz, Smoke . so intimate. sat right next to the drummer.

we also went to Blue Note for Harlem Gospel choir. I think I might prefer going to the church itself to see gospel.

Cloisters on 242nd houses much of the Medieval collection for the Met. It's fantastic and way, way less crowded than the main museum.

I am as anti Starbucks coffee as anyone, but as a coffee nerd, the reserve (and roastery) locations with the Clover brewers are the real deal.

You will be just about next door to our favorite restaurant, Angelo's Coal Oven Pizzeria.

If you like cheesecake, then you definitely need to either go to one of the locations of Junior's Cheesecake and Deli, or get a slice delivered.

If you happen to need anything grocery-related, there is a Morton Williams Supermarket across the street mid-block.

We really enjoyed Summit One Vanderbilt for the views combined with the mirrors, silver beach balls, and other photo opportunities. https://summitov.com/

There is so much to do, especially for your son's first trip. It will be hard to pare down the list. Happy planning!

I like Katz Deli, but go mid-afternoon for a shorter longish line. I go box office hopping in the morning looking for great show deals that afternoon or evening. You have to be flexible. I've often gotten great orchestra or boxes for halfoff or less. Better.seats that you'd get at tkts. I echo the free Staten Island ferry for great pics of the Statue of Liberty.

What kind of shows do you like? Musicals, plays? There are so many great ones to see. I recommend Purpose (it won the Tony for Best Play this season) and Maybe Happy Ending (it won the Tony for Best Musical this season). But there are so many others! I had good luck at TKTS last month, but I also buy tickets on Telecharge, or walk to the box office and save on fees. I highly recommend Just In Time (Jonathan Groff as Bobby Darin in a musical) at Circle in the Square. It is a very entertaining show. Operation Mincemeat (musical) is really fun. If you like John Krasinksi, Angry Alan (off-Broadway play) is good. Stranger Things (play with special effects) is like an amusement park attraction, and a must-see for fans of the Netflix series.

I enjoy eating at Trattoria Dell'arte. If you get the Elevated Rewards discount card at the hotel, you can get 15% off.

For a quick bowl to-go meal, Naya (Mediterranean) on 56th is good. If you like Indian food, I enjoy Bengal Tiger on 56th. If you want a light snack, Los Tacos No. 1 on 43rd is delicious.

Definitely walk the High Line, and if you are interested in visiting the 911 Memorial, that is downtown.

Have a great week!

Tastes can be different - and sometimes a food hall is necessary. Last millennium, I started with the Chelsea Market and I found a similar one in Hell’s Kitchen. My favorite place WAS the Food Hall underneath the Plaza Hotel - it was the closest to the bHC properties. They’re tucked into historic buildings all over the city and underground too. Turnstyle is the closest to the 6th Ave Hilton properties. I also like the Fulton Market pier 17, TimeOut in Brooklyn, and Grand Central Dining level.

For Live Music - a 5 minute walk from any of the bHC properties is 54Below - a not for profit venue.

Presumably this is the one at Gotham Market? This is where we first discovered Ample Hills Creamery. Due to poor planning by the owners, they have scaled back considerably, but still can be found. The market itself, though, is great, as you say.

Cheers.

So far having a ball. Saw Book of Mormon yesterday, along with some great food. Successfully used metro (lol) and generally great time. Times Square was… entertaining. Copinette (seafood) was really nice last evening. Stopped at Tomi Jazz after dinner but line to get in, so passed. Too hot/humid to stand outside.

Looking at Birdland for Jazz/ dinner tonight. Smoke for Jazz/dinner probably Wednesday. Might grab tickets to Chicago show, but not sure yet.

It’s warm and humid but not as hot as it’s been, so they say.

The most annoying thing so far is finding a good place to set up and work.

Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center is decent and quite close to The Quin.

Actually, the most annoying thing is when owners decide that the owners lounge is a great place to set up and work, then proceed to have video teleconferences without headphones. Second most annoying thing is when they do use headphones, but shout at their laptops rather than use a decent microphone. That's why I book a 1 BR PH when I'm planning on working there; it gives me a decent workplace and avoids impacting fellow owners. (Maybe I should start turning up the volume on the TVs when I'm there....)
