My brother passed away in 2022 and I am finally to the point of dealing with his timeshares. He owned points based week at Orange Lakes. I'm told it has a points value of 139,000 points/year. He also has a week at Holiday Hills in Bronson, Mo (2 bedroom, annual, platinum season).

I'm trying to figure out if I should just let them go back to Holiday Inn Vacation Club, give them away (if I can), or keep them. It's pretty hard to get a straight answer from anyone at HIVC about how these things work.

Can anyone point me to something that explains the basics of HIVC?

Thanks

You are not obligated to take your brother's timeshares. Sorry for your loss. Only if your name is on the deed, otherwise you don’t have to do anything with the timeshares.
If you want a timeshare you can find one on TUG for much less. Or you can rent one and not be responsible for maintenance fee.

Sorry for you loss
What Silentg said is correct

These timeshares have no value to sell

If you wanted them if they are points as it’s your brother it should stay points and be useful for you if you had an interest and like timesharing if already paid for and fees up to date.

I like HICV. Familiarize yourself with the destinations and see if it’s a good fit. Maybe keep FL and dump MO?

Double check with HICV that the points stay at transfer. I've heard two different explanations on who is eligible for point transfer. One includes siblings and the other only includes Parent/Child Transfers.

Have you called the legal dept to see what paper work they need, and charges to change from his name to yours? I would estimate that to be about $500-1k in closing costs, title insurance, name transfer, etc. If he was still paying for the purchase, I would let them go. Do you like their resorts well enough to go every year? It will be cheaper than the public pays, but only if you want to go every year. We also enjoy the bargains we get sometimes on Interval, which you can only be a member of as a timeshare owner.

I’m sorry for your loss. Why cant you just use it as if you were your brother. When you are done, you can just walk away. If you take it over it can be expensive to get your name off the deed.
