Warning, this is long. We attended the 90 minute presentation at French Quarter in Branson last week. We are well satisfied Worldmark owners but thought we'd like to check out some other resorts in Branson. We would, typically, buy resale but I was interested in seeing the resort and their prices because we generally stay in the P/H units at Worldmark and sometimes travel with our children/grandchildren. We originally bought Trendwest from the developer (we were new to timeshare at that time) but have since bought a week in Florida on ebay.

We were shopping at one of the craft malls and one of the "body snatchers" made us (actually, my husband) an offer we could not refuse. So we got there early (8:15 for an 8:30 appointment) and waited until 8:50 before someone came to get is. The salesperson (Dwayne) apoligized for our having to wait but assured us we would be happy to hear about their resort. He offered us coffee, etc. and my husband immediately excused himself to go to the little boy's room and Dwayne said to me , where the H... did he go already. I explained he would be right back.

Well, after we settled in, Dwayne asked why we came to the presentation and we said we were Worldmark owners but wanted to see what other timeshares were available in Branson because we visit there regularly with our kids/grandkids and needed more space. We also mentioned at one point that we owned a week in Florida. He asked where we owned and how much we had paid for the unit and we said we had purchased a resale week in Florida on ebay. He seemed to immediately get agitated. After a few moments, he started getting very loud and beligerent. He said he could not sell us anything at ebay prices. He said we were wasting his time and causing maintenance fees to rise because we just came for the "freebies." I assured him I was not there just for the freebies because we often traveled with our kids/grandkids and wanted/needed extra accommodations. I wanted to see what amenities/accommodations/prices French Quarter offered. I asked him not to raise his voice at us (since we were seated at a small round table right in front of him) and he said he was raising his voice because the music was so loud. I observed that eveyone else was talking in a normal tone and that we would appreciate him doing the same.

He had already decided we were not buying so he told us we could just sit there for awhile and filll out the survey information they had as far as how often we traveled, how much we spent on vacation, how much we spent on hotel rooms, with whom we traveled , etc. I told him I'ld be happy to fill that out, which I did, and then I asked to see the accommodations. He told me he wouldn't show them to us because we weren't going to buy from him. I asked for a price for 3 and 4-bedroom units and he said he wouldn't quote a price because we were wasting his time.

At this point, I was doing a slow burn because he was trying to intimidate us and I then asked to see a manager. He said, "Fine, I'll get one and you'll see how they (the managers) operate." What??? He summoned a manager and I explained that we were interested in purchasing another timeshare. I told her that Dwayne had already decided we weren't gong to purchase from him and he refused to show us any units or quote us any prices. He began to get very loud again telling us we just came for freebies and were wasting everyone's time. At this point, several people were looking at him because he was staring to "lose it." I very calmly asked him to stop yelling at us again because we were not accustomed to dealing with people who use that tone. I then told the manager I'd be interested in getting to the end of the presentation so I could tell someone how poorly we were treated by Dwayne. At that point, Dwayne threw down his pencil, and said, why don't just do it right now. I said okay I'd be happy to and they brought over another manager. At this point, I began to explain to both managers how rudely we had been treated and as I looked at Dwayne while explaining this, he began to roll his eyes. I said directly to him, "Dwayne, you can roll your eyes all you want, but you know I'm telling the truth." At that point, one of the managers said, "Dwayne, that's exactly what you were doing and that is very unprofressional." Then, Dwayne jumped up and said, "I'm out of here for today."

The managers were very apologetic and offered to show us a unit and quote a price. I told them I felt if they treated prospective customers in this manner, then they probably treated their owners even worse and that I wouldn't be buying or recommending their resort to anyone. They assured me Dwayne was gone for the day. I told them, if I owned French Quarter, Dwayne would be gone for good--not just for the day.

I don't usually care to go on on timeshare presentations when on vacation. I was interested in the French Quarter because they are located right on Hwy. 76 and I thought it might be something we would want to purchase. However, if this is the way most timeshare salespeople treat you, I don't care to go on any more presentations. As I said, we don't do "timeshare sales presentations" for the goodies. I enjoy my vacation time and don't like to waste it. I just thought it might be something we were interested in for the future.

Anyway, long story short, he was the rudest person I've encountered in a very long time. And I don't think I'll be ready any time soon for another presentation-no matter what they offer.

I'm very happy we were treated well in our Worldmark presentation 5 years ago or we probably would not have purchased. Even though we paid developer price at that time, I'm happy about our purchase. It got us to vacation more than we ever had previously.

Amy,

Did you know that that timeshare salesman did not get admonished in all likelihood? He most likely got high fived in that you will not be going on a timeshare presentation anytime soon. They take pride in putting you through pyschological torture if they find out early you are not going to buy and you are wasting their time. Sometimes they will try to keep you there for 3-5 hours just to waste your time. They'll be willing to do that if their next tour isn't for several hours and they've got nothing better to do than to torture you psychologically.

Lots Of Dwaynes Are Out There.

French Quarter Dwayne reminds me of the guy who got us at a tour & presentation at Tahiti (or whatever they call it now) out in Las Vegas 1 time.

No matter what we said, all he ever replied was "Cash, check, or charge?"

I'm hoping to persuade The Chief Of Staff to go to Branson for our (42nd) anniversary in a few months. If we get to Branson & if we sign up for a timeshare tour at the French Quarter, I'll ask for Dwayne.

When he starts rolling his eyeballs & accusing us of wasting his time by just being there for the freebies, I will respond with another nugget of TUG wisdom that I read just today -- "Hey, Dwayne, it's your marketing program. I'm here because you invited me."

Watch out, Dwayne. We're looking for you.

In other words, just a typical timeshare tour! :D

If are sincere in your anger, the Missouri AG, Jay Nixon, is one of the strongest in the nation concerning the vacation industry. He has prosecuted many companies. The US District Court in Springfield also has.

Hey, lookie here, I just happen to have the AG's email address. Go figure.

ag@ago.mo.gov

If that doesn't work, let me know and me and Bingo will jump in the pickup and run on over to town and rough up Duh-wane.

Incidentally, I called on a Branson resort's ad last week, cuz I need something to do in my spare time. Plus, I have this 20 years of timeshare experience I otta put to use. As mildly as I dare put it, I would never work for the greedy, sleazy b---- I talked to on the phone. I don't care how much BIG MONEY she dangled in front of me.

I talked to her about the last 8 or so years, saying I have sent almost every day talking timeshare with others around the world. She could not even begin to fathom what it was I was talking about, because no one is paying me a lot of money to do it.

Todd was the name of our rude salesman!

He was at Vistana in Orlando and knew we would not buy. We owned two timeshare weeks at the time, both purchased from developers long before his sales spiel. Rick made the mistake of telling him that we had a wonderful opportunity to buy two summer weeks at our home resort for $2,500 for the pair. He couldn't have been more rude after that. He shook Rick's hand at the end of the long 90 minutes and said, "Do me a favor. Don't ever waste another salesman's time like this again, if you have no intention to buy." Rick is a gentleman and chose not to say anything back, but he did call the sales and RCI offices at the resort to complain about the guy.

Our second rudest salesperson was an older woman, old enough to be our mother, at OLCC in 1991. We decided to be honest and tell her that we would not buy and that we came to look at the resort for future trades. She drove that golf cart with a vengeance and told us we were her captives for 90 minutes and she would not let us go for a minute less. BocaBum would agree that it is better to LIE! ;)

Our Vistana Sales Person Was The Best.

We had been pre-gifted with discount Disney tickets for the kids, so that might have had something do with it, but the Vistana Orlando sales lady who took us over to see Vistana Villages was the opposite of high-pressure & obnoxious.

When she asked about our other timeshares, we told her about our resale Floating Diamond 3BR lock-off week at a nearby Orlando resort & about our newly acquired low-cost overseas 2BR timeshare, which we told her was what we deposited in order to get the very RCI exchange into Vistana Orlando that we were on right then. We also mentioned TUG.

She also asked how much we had paid, so we told her. She asked us to repeat the amount, as though she wasn't sure she heard correctly, so we told her again.

At that, she closed her book & said, "I can tell from how little you paid for your overseas timeshare that you won't be interested in buying here, because all our weeks cost significantly more. So we won't need to take up any more of your time. But before you go, I'd appreciate it if you'd write down that timeshare-user website & write down the name of your overseas timeshares."

We wrote down the URL & the resort name for her, she sent us on our way, & that was that.

That happened in January 2003. It was our very 1st timeshare exchange.

On future timeshare sales tours, do you think it would help any if I wore a TUG T-shirt & a TUG baseball cap?

First timeshare presentation I attended was 14 years ago in Cancun. At that time, we were just invited to a breakfast, and I didn't even know it was for timeshare. They assigned us an American, explain the timeshare concept to us, without showing us any resort or accomodation. His line was: "wouldn't you like to vacation in Cancun every year?" I said yes, but it doesn't mean I am going to buy one. He acted agitated after that, but wasn't really rude, he acted like a bum with nothing better to do for the day anyway, although a little bitter for not making a sale. It was the worst breakfast ever for me, and it taught me a lesson for not attending any free breakfast at any hotel.

My second experience was at Whistler with Club Intrawest 3 years ago. We were at the Gondola and this very nice girl approached us. She is very polite and made a nice offer. I happend to be interested in Club Intrawest at the time, having a friend who own membership with them, and really enjoyed it. I decided to take a look at their current pricing. We were driven by our hotel, Westin, to the club intrawest presentation centre. It took approx 90 minutes, a video and tour of facility, then sat down with a salesperson, who explain their point system and price structure. I told him I like it, but I can not commit 25K on the spot, I am a business person myself, I need to think some more. I ask for a brochure and price list, they refuse to give me. Then they brought in a manager, and by this time (being in sales myself), I know i really should not buy given the way they are pressuring me. I told them flat that there is no way I wil buy without doing research, and I am sure if I want to buy after a couple of days, they will still give me the same price. All types of bonus weeks, freebies, discounts were thrown in, but I did not back down. They graciously let me go afterwards, even paid for a taxi to take me back to our hotel. We got a gift certificate that was enough to buy my son a very nice snowboard outfit.

Of course, I did not return to buy, because with a little research, I realize I could have bought for 2/3 of their price resale. Now that I found TUG, I know I can do even better.

Too bad these sales people were not as bad as the other, because being in sales, I know how to get back at them!!!

I feel for you, Amy. We went on a timeshare tour once over around Madeira Beach, Florida, and I thought my husband and the timeshare sales guy were going to get into a fist fight. My husband is 6' 7" and big enough to hurt somebody if they get him riled up bad enough. All I wanted to do was get out of there without a fist fight and a trip to the county jail.

When we bought our initial DVC points, my husband insisted on buying over the phone (telephone sales). But we did eventually meet our Disney guide when we were investigating adding on some more points. She is the nicest lady. She wouldn't push you into anything. My husband started laughing and said, Disney gets you to buy more points by being super nice and having a fairy godmother type lady "nice you" into it. ;)

Boca-- I am surprised that Dwayne would not be reprimanded for his behavior but I guess I'm pretty naive about how they can treat you. We really don't make a habit of going to these things. We did attend one other presentation while we were in Branson--it was the new Cross Creek development (RCI points). Our salesperson there was very nice and when we said we were not interested in purchasing at this time, he got us out of there within about 45 minutes total. So when I went to French Quarter, I pretty much expected to be treated in the same manner. Live & learn.

AwayWeGo--we were in Branson to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary. Congratulations on your upcoming 42nd. If you go to the French Quarter, be sure to give a big High Five to Dwayne for me, would you.

JLB--thanks for the link to the Missouri AG. I definitely am planning on registering a complaint with Jay Nixon. In the meantime, I would be so happy to hear you and Bingo "roughed him up a little bit" for me. I get a big grin just thinking about it. It sure is good to have my TUG friends take care of things for me.

Thanks to all of you for responding. I just needed to vent a little.

Amy
