Have been here for a few weeks and have experienced only one rainy afternoon.:D Weather is mirroring that experienced in January of 2017. Expecting a storm this Friday but we do bring rain gear with us. From our first stay at this resort 9 years, we were able to get on a boat trip along the north shore out of Hanalei, rather than driving to Port Allen. The cost was easier to swallow knowing we will not get to even see those areas this year by car or by foot. There is a thread on the Hawaii Timeshares which is discussing the eventual re-opening of the highway West of Hanalei and ideas to cut down on the growing traffic between Kilauea and Ke'e beach.
The campus looks great but still with a few soft spots in the lawn, residual of the 3-4 feet of rain than ran through the resort in April plus a heavy rain in late December. As a result of the April storm, all movable pool umbrellas are gone and have been replaced with permanently fixed, thatched umbrellas.
Did the owners update which focused on Nanea or buying an additional annual unit here which we had no interest in. They offered an Encore plan which replaces the now discontinued Explorer. Encore offers 6 days/5 nights at your resort (only-not traferable) for $1295, which must be used within 18 months. Since we come to the Kauai only every 2 years, it was of no interest to us.
If any of you are here, will be soon or have a question, let us know.
    Aloha!

So no offer to sell Westin Flex? Even though WPORV is in the Flex Trust. Seems to fall in line with the reports of not selling Flex in Hawaii. Interesting on the renaming of Explorer to Encore. Encore is what Marriott Vacation Club calls their similar product. Perhaps a change because of the merger.

The only discussion of Westin Flex came up when we inquired about the status of the Sheraton timeshare units in Poipu. Yes, they prefaced the Encore offer by noting that its origin was Marriott.

Hmm. That doesn't really make much sense. The Sheraton Kauai Resort is certainly not in the Westin Flex program and, as of now, is not in the Sheraton Flex program either.

It had better be in Sheraton Flex (or at least a few units had better be in Sheraton Flex) if they sold anyone Sheraton Flex using Vistana documents showing that the Poipu property was part of that trust. Otherwise, clear fraud.

What is the deal with access to the former St. Regis? Is the place shut down while they are undergoing renovations and rebranding? Are they running people over in the shuttle? Can Westin guests use the lounge chairs?

Please don't hijack threads here. Your question has been discussed previously.

[ragdoll - The OP asked if anyone had any questions, and this question is both appropriate and on-topic since the St. Regis is still affiliated with WPORV, at least for now. DeniseM]

Thanks for the report! Did the encore package come with any points? Or was that just for the room?

As I mention earlier in a different thread, for now it is business as usual for Westin guests at the Princeville Resort, with the minor exception that you cannot charge purchases to your room # at WPORV. Shuttle service to and fro remains the same. Westin guests continue to be able to use the lounge chairs at the beach. Westin guests have never been able to use the pool, pool towels or the lounge chairs at the pool.
No official statement by the Princeville Resort as to when the renovations will begin but the gossip there is that the premises will remain open, with the renovations done section by section.

FWIW, we are not Flex owners, Vistana or otherwise. The rep told us we would have to use hotel points to stay in Sheraton Kauai timeshares units.

This is the usual sales person drivel - you can absolutely use Staroptions at 8 mos.

    Clarification:

Westin Princeville is in Westin Flex.

Sheraton Flex is a different program that doesn't include any of the Hawaii resorts.

***My understanding is that they are not selling Westin Flex in Hawaii (yet) because they are not licensed to sell it in Hawaii.

Some good news for those of us that walk the public trail from behind Building 2 or drive around to Anini beach. The Kauai County Council approved funding on a temporary basis for three new life guards to address increased usage during the winter months and because beaches west of Hanalei are not available due the road closure.
It has also been reported that Queen's bath is closed for the time being and the police are using a new devise to immobilize vehicles illegally parked in the neighborhood which surrounds the trailhead. To remove the windshield devise, the driver must insert a credit card to remove it and deposit the unit into a drop off box.

I just used WPORV SOs (studio) at 8 month point for 5 nites in a 1Bd next Sept at Sheraton Kauai (Poipu) - returning to the origin of my TUG awareness. Tagging onto our 1Bd WPORV (following WKORV OFD stay). I know the downsides, but change of pace. Plus, we have friends in Koloa.

Online reservations had Sheraton Poipu as low availability.

    And a tiger shark...

Hawaii's Hanalei Bay closed after shark attacks surfer

Authorities have closed down Hawaii's Hanalei Bay to swimmers after an apparent shark attack early Monday afternoon.

A male resident was surfing at a spot off Hanalei known as "the bowl" when he was allegedly bitten by a larger Tiger shark, according to the Kauai Fire Department.

The man sustained multiple lacerations to his leg and was transported to the hospital, according to the fire department.

Since the attack, lifeguards have posted "Shark Sighted" and "No Swimming" signs along Hanalei Bay and will reassess the water Tuesday to determine if it's safe for swimming, the fire department said.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has been notified of the incident as is required by standard protocol, officials said.

Quick updates: Whale activity increased each day through Thursday. Best activity was late on Thursday, in front of the Makai golf course. Because of the forecast that the large low pressure front from the northwest was to arrive today (Friday), we spent a sunny day in Poipu(stopped at the new Sheraton timeshares there but that report is for another day). By the time we arrived back here at the resort, it was too windy to stand oceanfront.
If you are arriving Saturday through Tuesday, consider a rain jacket and a fleece or extra layer. Umbrellas are useless right now with winds 20-40 mph. Weather on the Northshore is always changing in the winter months so check and recheck weather reports. This storm is coming from the NW, which is unusual. Will be interesting to see the flight schedule in and out of Lihue the next few days.

Weather update: high winds and monster waves are building on the northshore, predicted to peak tomorrow (Sunday) at about noon. A large low pressure system (called a "cut-off low")is presently located above Kauai is the cause. Flooding is expected in low lying areas and the Red Cross has set up a shelter in Kilauea. People have been asked to forgo unnecessary travel on Sunday.
Of course, WPORV and Princeville stand high above sea level but the wind again tonight is incredibly strong. Winds of 30-40 mph, gusting to 60 are bending the palm trees and blowing their fronds around. Significant rain is not expected but I wonder if the Hanalei Bay area could be adversely affected.
Amazing to look down on a deserted looking Anini beach from building Building 3 this afternoon. I am going to move our rental car into the parking structure.
