Travel Safety in Mexico

Mexico is a very large country. I found the article rather silly, and unworthy of mention.

The bottom line is very simple - it depends on where in Mexico you are traveling.

Sorry about that painfully obvious point, but apparently it needed to be restated.

Driving around Culiacan,Tijuana, Chilpancingo or Ciudad Juarez is quite a bit different than the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen or Cancun. Sort of like driving around the southern side of Bridgeport, parts of New Haven and Detroit vs. Boise, or Overland Park.

Did you read the blog? You're saying the same thing the author was. There are places to skirt, just as there are in the US. And I fully agree with the author in that if your experience of Mexico is limited to Riviera Maya, Playa Del Carmen, and Cancun, you haven't seen Mexico.

You're right, I should have continued reading after the 3rd paragraph, and paid less attention to the nice looking Uzi. ;)

But 3 paragraphs devoted to satirize this brief blog? :shrug:
 
That's been our experience everywhere we've gone--and definitely our experience at our home base in Rosarito (25 miles south of Tijuana, in "the dangerous border area.") If we wanted to be involved with drugs in some way, it wouldn't be safe, but that could be said of a lot of places.

I liked the pictures and the article. My experiences have been very good in my wanderings through out Mexico. I speak very little Spanish, but, in Mexico, every one I have met seems to try to communicate with me . While driving in a rural area of Mexico one of the women in our car needed to use a restroom. We were in a residential area and I asked a person in front of his casa if the women could use their banjo. They said "si" and not only was the bajo available to us, we were invited to join them for a meal.

At my home in the USA we wouldn't let anyone in for any reason unless we were aquainted.

I think Mexico is pretty safe. My nephew and two of his friends drove an old van to Nicaragua and drove though-out Mexico for 5 months. The guy that posted the you tube clip of their trip had to go back to school but my nephew and his friend ended up in Nicaragua for a while.

I guess I posted these because the weather is getting cold and my thoughts are heading south, before me.

Nephews trip by Cole. They are all about 21 on this trip last year.

Thanks again for the travel/trip reports, great video too. Well worth your posting them thanks. Sorry to see what I call worthless criticisms of spelling, hope you don't find them as annoying as I do.
Also, mods I'd suggest to remove the posted Mayan Language Exam and start another thread with it.

How wonderful, two English lessons in one thread labeled "Travel safety in Mexico," let me get my notepad. What goes first the , or the " ? Yes that is sarcasm.
When a thread such as this barely gets started and posts (like mine now) go off topic it really takes away from the thread, imo. This site (MX) seems to me to be very quiet these days. Letting a discussion get going before literally shutting it down with nonsense is I think a reasonable suggestion, you may disagree. If a thread has been up a while, then yeah, tear it down with some "ribbing," or a language lesson, but not off the bat.

My addition, back on topic, is a very good book (I have read a bit), "Drive Nacho Drive," they too have a web site. They ended up driving around the world, but started down through MX and also drove a VW pop-up camper like the OP.

That is an incorrect generalization, not "all." Some good posts here, then the "ribbing" started and we got to the Mayan Language exam. Glad that did get moved and glad the OP was not as annoyed as I was (I said that).

Back on topic again. Last year the dad of an owner at our Playa resort took off in his Mini Cooper and drove from the the NW-US. I just searched a bit, could not find his blog. Funny when she posted, another said "no, homework first, don't go" and she replied, "well he is pulling into the parking lot, I was asking about parking." Now that was funny.

Thanks for posting this!!! I sent the link to 3 couples who traveled to MX with us about 7 years ago and, my read is they don't want to go back due to the increased media hype since then (but maybe I can change their minds).

Doesn't help that we were all scammed from an ATM at a convenience store (I've posted several warnings on TUG about this).

And DW got her CC info stolen at a restaurant here in Washington one time - along with five other people in her party (paying separate checks).

Not to mention all of the times that she has had credit card data compromised at shopping malls in the US, or from an on-line US retailer getting hacked.

IMHO - it's a hell of a lot easier to keep from getting hacked in MX than it is in the US. Perhaps it's more ubiquitous in MX, but it's also easier to evade.
 
That is interesting that folks that did it 7 years ago themselves have now lost interest. Going beyond ts travelers and into the RV, expat, and adventure traveler world the numbers driving MX are enormous and their accounts are great reads for me. I hope to do it shortly after retirement, but it's all talk until I do. Reading 150,000 cross into MX everyday, "While many of those killed in organized crime-related violence have themselves been involved in criminal activity, innocent persons have also been killed. The number of U.S. citizens reported to the Department of State as murdered in Mexico was 100 in 2014 and 103 in 2015." I also think this sounds right and is what I would do anyway:
"To reduce risk when traveling by road, we strongly urge you to travel between cities throughout Mexico only during daylight hours, to avoid isolated roads, and to use toll roads." Belize here I come :cheer:
 
Last night we were talking with our youngest son and his wife about out upcoming trips. I guess I said we are going to stupid Hawaii before we get to go to Mexico. They kept saying though out the evening that they wished they had my problem. I didn't really mean stupid Hawaii but was referring to my choice of destination order this next winter.

Yes, I agree that a person can get scammed in Mexico but people get scammed everywhere from what I hear.

I guess the main reason I want to head to Mexico is the scuba opportunities in the warm Caribbean Sea. I will be diving in Hawaii but the water is warmer in Mexico.
