I apologize in advance if there is a recent, detailed thread covering all of this, but I haven't been able to find it.

My family and I were down in Mexico this week, and attended the Exotic Travelers vacation club presentation while staying at Azul Beach (which we really loved by the way). Never owned any type of time share or vacation club package before, and I will admit I know very little about how they work, which I'm sure is likely to get me into trouble. But the deal sounded great, and as I understand it I have 5 business days from yesterday to cancel everything, so I caved and bought.

The package was their Sapphire package. I bought 60 weeks (10 exotic weeks that are basically 50% off what one typically pays for the all-inclusive with some added bonuses like airport transfers, kids up to 6 free, upgraded rooms, etc...and 50 explorer weeks that I can use to exchange for weeks with other properties) DAE was included, as well as the choice between either RCI or II. They strongly recommended II, saying it was easier to deal with and exchange for quality weeks. There are no maintenance fees ever, and so other than paying the exchange fee (I think it was like 150$ or something) and a transfer fee of like 35-50$ if I give my week to someone else, there are no other fees as I understand them. My total price for the 60 weeks, including some free 10year yacht membership was a bit less than $5k all in.

Now to my questions (there are a bunch):
- Is this for real, or some kind of scam? It sounds almost too good to be true - 5k for 60 weeks is less than 100 per week, so even adding in an exchange fee if we ever get any properties off II/RCI/DAE, it seems like a steal.
- We ended up going with II although were told we can switch. Is RCI better? I've read something on these boards about RCI's point system and how you can deposit a bunch of the ET explorer weeks and then combine them to actually get good properties off RCI, and II doesn't seem to have that option, but that maybe II gives better value for the ET weeks to begin with. Also in calling II today, they seemed to have the Azul properties as premium 5 stars or whatever is considered high in their scale, so they implied they would give me decent options. The only negative was I understand my weeks come over as studios and not 2 or even 1-bedrooms. I'm worried this may lock us out of some good places.
- How do the ET weeks get deposited? Do these weeks always go into the exchange banks as azul sensatori off-peak time studios (assuming a sapphire membership)? I can't even understand how they would figure out peak or off-peak time. I've heard the karishma hotels are rated premium 5 star resorts on II, but do people have luck actually exchanging these weeks and getting quality destinations during good times? This is really what will determine if this program is a decent deal or a ripoff, and what I am most interested in.
- Do Mexico beach resorts like the Azul Sensatori give me good exchanges on either II or RCI? The vacation club folks seemed to imply that Hawaii or other quality destinations would not be a problem at all...
- We were told the way the exchanges work was that we would go in as a premium studio - and they would try and find us compatibles. But if a 1 or 2 bedroom came up available or if we were looking at a resort that only had bigger rooms, then we would get those. Is this really true, or is my priority going to be so low that its never going to happen?
- Finally a general exchange question - what determines the priority order of who gets a week that becomes available. Does the time your request has been out there factor in? What about what you are exchanging?

I know this was long and I really appreciate anyone taking the time to answer this, especially anyone with experience with ET and either II or RCI or any moderators. Thanks in advance!

Dude, I'm not going to say you were snookered, but I have a question that will likely answer yours:
-- Have you read your contract? --
... What you were "told" doesn't matter... most of that was likely hogwash.
... A saying in this forum: How do you know a TS salesman is lying? His lips are moving.

I appreciate the response, but I'm reading the contract as I write this, and while I'm not a lawyer I see all of the things I've talked about - 50 explorer weeks, 10 exotic weeks. Exotic weeks get you use of their royal suits, of which you get "preferred rates" of no less than 50% off published rates (basically the all inclusive fee is discounted). Explorer weeks can be used with one of the exchanges offered in the promotion (mine notes DAE and Interval International), where it says I only have to pay the exchange fees. What I can't read in the contract is people's actual experience putting these weeks on any of the exchanges and if they have real value to exchange. And what I'm hoping to hear are from folks that have either successfully or unsuccessfully used this program.

Any responses with some of this information, before my time to potentially cancel this, are really really appreciated.

Others will tell you this very soon, I'm sure. But here's my advice: rescind now. Research all of your options, including the Exotic Travel option. It's almost certain you will be able to find a better TS purchase deal that will meet your needs; it will probably cost you WAY less and suit you better. If you figure out that you still want the Exotic Travel option, the deal will still be there no matter what they told you during the sales pitch.

Is there anyone on here that has had an experience with Exotic Travelers (positive or negative) they can share? I understand Exotic is owned by Karisma hotels - which seems to be a respected company and not some third-party little shop that changes their name once in a while to avoid their reputation.

Anyone with Exotic Travelers personal experience that can share any additional information? I still have a couple of days and I'm trying to find out all the information I can. Thanks.

I dont have the experience needed to comment (and at least so far, neither does anyone else here) but the fact that you are unsure enough about what you are getting into as you seem to be (after all you seem to be desperate for some input...4 posts in the last day or so) tells me that you should rescind

You should understand what you bought. and the confidence should come from your own research, and/or the advice of trusted advisors.

My rules...

If it sounds too good to be true (your words, not mine) It probably is.

If I have to be "sold" to the point that I feel that I just give up and cave (again your word not mine) I really dont want it

I should wake up the next day with no questions and no regrets (you have questions) ...If I dont rescind

Anything that has to be sold with high pressure tactics rather than bought with the help and advice of a trusted salesman, I dont want

As my daddy used to say...dont worry if you missed the streetcar, there will be another one come by soon enough

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rescind; do your research, and go back next year. I bet the same stuff is available at the same price

Ronparise - everything you just wrote is correct. I KNOW that's what I really should do....I'm just hoping someone comes along and writes that they are Exotic Traveler members, have been for years, and have had no problems exchanging weeks with RCI or II or going back down to the Karisma hotels.

Here's a little more insight. Trades into plush resorts on the Yucatan Pennisula are neither difficult or expensive to trade to in points. The resorts make their money off the all-inclusive fee. Not all resorts, though, require all-inclusive fees.

While you don't have a maintanance fee with what you describe, you've got "required all-inclusive" fees. Even if you get half off, you're still forced to pay to use your weeks. Conceptually, that's not that different than maintanance fees. Being forced to pay all-inclusive fees to use my week wouldn't be terribly attractive to me. If you always travel to all-inclusive places on a regular basis, though, then the deal might not be that bad.

Sorry I don't have any first hand experience with them. My advice is to rescind and do more research. An educated consumer always makes better decisions.

And more...

Studios in MX will likely not get you HI, unless they're prime holidays or unless you join RCI and combine weeks at an additional cost per combination.
I don't belong to II, but had heard you can't upgrade your unit size (but perhaps there's an extra cost that allows you to).
To see what exchange value these weeks might have, I checked RCI for 'Exotic Travelers' and nothing came back from the search, so I'm not sure if that's the name that would get deposited.

I admit I know nothing about Exotic Travelers, but it seems a bit iffy to me, and I would also recommend you rescind to do more homework. There are great deals at great locations going for $1 or less.

The fact that no TUG member seems to belong to Exotic Travelers is NOT a good sign!

Hi,
i am currently doing my own research regarding various timeshares and was trying to compare palace resort membership (was at moon palace just recently) with exotic travel club membership ( a friend was at azul beach). I had attended the palace timeshare sales pitch but did not buy. it is very difficult to find good consistent information on either of these membership clubs however, i did come across postings by a tug member who is an exotic travel club member and had posted numerous times on the topic; however, she does not seem to be too active in the forum in the last little while. she goes by njwhite on the forum. maybe if you are able to contact her, you may get some help?

Exotic Travel

I haven't been in Tug for awhile and just found this. I have been a member of ET since 2007 and love it. We traded our 2 weeks at Sea Garden in Florida for membership.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. I'll be glad to answer any questions.

One reason, is we kind of feel like red-headed step children here. I have been lambasted before. I don't think many of the members come to Tug, although I have recommended it many times. I know of many other ET members that are happy with their decision to purchase. And as in any type of ownership, I am sure there are some that are not happy. I've not met any though.

Exotic Travel Club

I know this is post is late but maybe if someone else is worried about Exotic Travel Club it will help. I joined Exotic in 2007 during my honeymoon at El Dorado Casita Royale. I have been very happy with my membership. I have been to El Dorado Seaside Suites and Azul Sensatori(my 1 yr old loved the kids pool!) since joining. I have also exchanged through RCI to go to Phoenix, Williamsburg VA(2 bedroom), Virginia Beach VA and I have exchanged for a 2 bedroom in Orlando FL this March.

I have never paid a maintenance fee and have been pleased with the savings I get when booking the home resorts. My wife uses the spa services more than I do but the 20% off those services are also a nice bonus. I am sure there are members that aren't pleased with their purchase but I haven't met them. I have attended the member dinners and wine tastings and met many other members. Some members visit the resorts multiple times in a year.

My bottom line is get the best deal possible for your weeks if you really like the resorts and USE THEM. Whether through the home resorts, RCI, II or Dial an Exchange you will most likely be pleased with the membership if you have vacation time and enough disposable income to go away for those vacations. Just like any timeshare or vacation club.

One caveat.. I have heard through some posts by European travelers that they do not get enough of a benefit from the club discounts to make the membership worthwhile. This may be the cost of the flight vs packages they receive to encourage the overseas travel. I'm not sure but European travelers will have to talk with European travelers who have joined the club. I have seen these concerns aired on the tripadvisor website.

Usually if your not happy with something you are more proactive in voicing your opinion. I think it's a positive that there aren't an army of unhappy Exotic members posting on this website.

Hope this helps others,
Rich

Exotic Travelers

I was like you in the beginning thinking that I had somehow been talked into a raw deal, But have been a member of ER since 2007. My wife and I purchased80 weeks at el dorado Seaside Suites on our honeymoon, and after some research on the web including Tugs I was scared. There are so many people giving advice on Exotic travelers that have no idea how the deal works, they have all been so SOLD by their own timeshare sales presentation that the ether has not yet worn off enough to consider that there could be a less expensive alternative than a traditional timeshare. I am ready to be flamed BTW! an, I know that I only own 80 weeks and your traditional timeshare ownership is forever (as long as you pay the maintenance fee), and mine is only for 80 weeks. That is TWO week long vacations per year for 40 years! We only pay the exchange fee. And, I know I only "Own" a studio, we have only ever stayed in a 2 bedroom at Sheraton Vistana, RonJons, Resort on Cocoa Beach, Discovery Beach in Cocoa Beach, HGVC Las vegas twice. Everyone on this site hates these travel clubs, and I don't know about other who have been taken, but I know about my deal and experience, My sales price was similiar to the original price listed, less than $100 per week. Unfortunately we have not been back to a Karisma but we are headed back soon, and if we though for a second that we would run out of weeks I would buy more from Karisma, and Exotic Travelers. It has been one of my best purchases that we have ever made in our lives!! My wife and I even split up our weeks, opened two RCI accounts in order to circumvent the 3 in 1 rules, or at least double up on them

Exotic Travel Club

What I would like to know is, whether they have fewer week packages, like 10 or 20 wks, instead of 40 or 80 weeks. Can't imaging using 40 or 80 weeks of this fantastic $100 / week deal; there's just not enough time, but 10 weeks @$100 /week sounds very doable and attractive.

Any of the current Exotic Travel Club members can answer me on this?

thx.

Exotic Travelers Club - Karisma Resorts

Hi, I am new to TUG but not to timesharing. We are very happy Exotic Travelers timeshare members! We have owned a traditional deeded timeshare at the Riviera Beach & Spa resort in Capistrano Beach California for 17 years and traded with II every year. We had to pay maintenance fees and property taxes every year and only owned 1 week every other year. II usually gave us an additional bonus week. We have been vacationing for years in the Riviera Maya and wanted a timeshare there but not in Cancun.
We went to El Dorado Royale as Friends in Paradise in Dec. 2007 and totally love these 5 star adults only gourmet food resort. We ended up buying into the Exotic Travelers Club with a Platinum Casitas package. Back in 2007 they did not have the Jewel memberships like Saphire etc. We knew what we wanted and what works for us since we have been timesharing for many years and we did not want to pay to much. Here is the deal we got. They took our Riviera Beach and Spa timeshare as equity trade and gave us 90 weeks with our Platinum Casitas Membership for $5,000. We no longer had to pay annual maintenance fees, property taxes and have way more weeks and flexibility than with our traditional timeshare. Our 90 weeks are for lifetime. We travel frequently and hope to travel even more when we retire down the line. The Exotic Travelers Club has worked out very well for us. Since we purchased we have stayed at El Dorado Seaside Suites 3x, El Dorado Royale 1x, Casitas Royale 1x. We got 50% discount on regular all inclusive suite rates and we always get a 1 category upgrade for free. We get 20% discount at the stores, spa and Maroma Marina and during every stay so far we got to enjoy their Member Gala nights and sunset cruises at Maroma. Since we usualy go for our anniversary we also get the Beach dinner included for free. Besides going to the Karisma resorts that we love we have deposited several weeks with RCI. We are allowed to deposit 3 weeks each year. So far we exchanged with RCI to Raintree Villa Vera on Isla Mujeres in a nice Studio suite for $179 exchange fee, The Grand Mayan Resort in a 1 bedroom villa with private plunge pool on the terrace for $179 exchange fee, Sirenis Maya Beach $179 exchange fee plus $149 per night per room AI fee, Perennial Tahoe Village 2 bedroom condo $179 exchange fee. For 2012 we already did a timeshare exchange to Lake Tahoe at Perennial Eagles Nest into a Studio with full kitchen for Presidents weeks during peak ski season (ski lift connecting to Heavenly is next to the resort) for $179 exchange fee and we booked 5 nights at at El Dorado Royale in a Ocean View Jacuzzi Suite for AI fee of $269 per night 2 people in May. We will get our free upgrade to oceanfront and they treat us members super well and always make us feel special. What is really nice is that you don't have to use up a whole week at Karisma resorts if you only want to stay less nights. Exotic just deducts the nights you actually book from the weeks/days you own. For exchanges with RCI you need to use a complete week. All I can say this gives us so much more than a traditional timeshare does. It was not expensive to buy into our timeshare membership. I know of timeshares that cost $20K and maintenance fees of $500 to over $1K per year. We can combine weeks for a small fee with RCI to get the highest trading power but so far never had to do this. RCI just gave us 1 and 2 bedroom condos they had available. If you choose a resort that is not All Inclusive than all you pay is the exchange fee $179. Another thing Exotic offers are Explorer condos. We got a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo at the Grand Mayan resort for $899 rental fee which we split with our friends that traveled with us. No AI' fees since it's a traditional timeshare condo resort. There are people that pay this much in maintenance fees each year for this resort. We live in California and I have checked all types of travel websites to see if they offered lower rates at Karisma resorts and as packaged with companies like Apple Vacations, Pleasant Mexico, Cheap Carribean etc. But I never found rates even close to our Exotic rates we get. It might be different for the European Travelers booking their trips from Europe but we feel like we are getting what was offered to us by the Exotic Sales Team at El Dorado Royale. I am just writing all this because there is so much negative stuff written about Exotic Travelers timeshare club from people that either don't know how to use their membership properly or don't understand how to exchange with RCI or II. You do have to educate yourself about using the timeshare exchange system. I will write here as well in the future if I have anything negative to say about Exotic Travelers or Karisma resorts. In the 4 years we owned there everything has been very positive for us and we are very pleased with our membership. I hope this will help someone that feels uneasy about purchasing.

Good information, but you need to hit the return key occassionaly to make your post readable.

Dont Do It....

I signed up 5 years ago with the offer.. The resort is amazing however the timeshare I have very much come to the conclusion is a CON... They offer 50% of their rates which most frequently you can find cheaper elsewhere and then they offer 30% off that price but you have to argue with them endlessly.. You are far better using caribbean warehouse which does it much cheaper with them and they provide upgrades etc etc free as well. Don't do it and keep your money in the bank.

PS

PS on the note of what the couple got above this shows the difference in how they do things with people.. I handed over a $12,000 timeshare and they wanted $8000 from me saying that was the best deal they could give and gave me 60 weeks!!!! Go figure when the couple above paid only $5000 and got 90 weeks....

I've been a member since 2006 and have been extremely satisfied. Exotic really takes card of their members. When I go back to my home resort, we are picked up at the airport in a Limo! :whoopie:

Trading power, Awesome! 5 RCI "Gold Star" trades in past 4 years.

All,

I have a time share with Exotic Travelers (had it since 2010) and I realize I do not travel enough to use it. Is there any way to sell these weeks (or the entire time share)? Since the weeks are not to your home resort how easy are they to sell/transfer?

Timeshares have little to no value. Travel clubs- which I suspect this is one- have none. If you have questions about how to transfer an ownership, (and can find a sucker) call them and ask. Note that this thread is several years old, and lightly posted on, by users with few other posts.

Best.

Jim
