Our son has decided to go to college in Philadelphia..looks like I will have some free time during his orientation (and for the next 4 years worth of visits)

I haven't been there in 25 years (or so)...

...just looking for some fun and interesting things to do...

...and restaurant suggestions!!

Lots of Italian - northern, southern, Naples, Sicilian. You can spend all 4 years visiting your son without being bored by the numerous Italian dining spots (I am NOT counting pizza joints).

As for your son's taste, there is a decent Chinatown (which has grown into all Asian types of food). The one advantage here is dinner can be found well after midnight - good if you are working on Pacific coast time or a college student. I have driven over the bridge for both the South Philly Italian and Chinese.

If you bring a very good friend, go French (or do they call that continental now?)

Parking is just like any other large city in the downtown area. Pay parking is a smart decision. South Philly residents use "chairs" to hold their parking places in front of the residences. If you like your tires or your nice paint job on the car, find another option. Chinatown does have parking meters.

Which section of the city is your son's school? Would help with recommendations.

The Philadelphia Zoo is close by and the Constitution Center is a short drive away.
