What does "pre-selected" mean? I assumed it meant pre-approved, so I didn't unfreeze my credit bureau accounts. It wasn't denied, but I had to unfreeze my Experian account which was a pain, then I had to go through two Chase voice menus, which was also a pain. When I finally got to the right human, he submitted the application again, and I was approved. Now I have 3 months to charge $4,000 to get the 90,000 points. No problem, since we use credit cards for everything.

If you're not "pre-selected" you only get 60,000 points.

I never carry a balance, so I don't care about their 22% interest rate. In this country, the average credit card debt is over $6000, and the median interest rate is over 24%. Yikes! What happened to the idea of saving until you can afford to buy something? If people didn't spend so much on interest, they'd have more to buy stuff.

Pre-selected is just their marketing ploy, they still have to approve based on your credit history/score. There is a new spin from Amex Hilton. I got the offer of no approval and credit check necessary. I went ahead and applied online and got instant approval, without the need to unfreeze my credit bureau accounts. Main thing is that I already have another Amex card, and hence there was not a need to check on my credit history/score. My credit score was certainly not affected and there was no query.

It means that you have met certain qualifiers -- maybe your state, zip code (for income), and a recent FICO above some number. That type of data is used to generate the marketing list. Pulling a full credit report is something completely separate, and can not be done until you have OK'd the credit inquiry.

So I was selected to be selected?

I don't think there is really such a thing as pre-approved anymore since they need your authorization to run your credit. They send out marketing mailers based on lists they purchase from the credit bureaus based on criteria that you are a customer they want to target with an offer. There is a way to have these stopped, but it is only temporary for a few years.

Amex is running a no-approval needed for existing Amex card holders. They do not run a credit check when you apply. I have Amex Bonvoy and got the offer to get Amex Hilton card. No approval, and with a 80K Hilton points bonus for the basic $95 per year card, I took up the offer because I need to keep my 300K+ Hilton points active.
